GOEDEN TAKES IRA DAUN MEMORIAL AT WILMOT
Wilmot, WI 5/19 Donny Goeden put a brilliant drive enroute to capturing the annual Wayne Daun Memorial for the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints at Wilmot Speedway.
The win was popular as Goeden car owner Bob Walldan lives in the Wilmot area and is celebrating his 50th year in motorsports, the Maxim no. 11 is painted special to recognize and honor Walldan's anniversary. Goeden outdueled Mike Kertscher in one of the fiercest battles ever witnessed at Wilmot.
Ty Bartz took command at the start and was putting together some of the best laps of his career. Bartz led the first several laps before fifth starting Kertscher took control on the high side. Bartz tried to counter Kertscher's pass and spun himself out of contention. Seventh starting Goeden moved into second on the restart and began to reel in the high flying Kertscher. Goeden took away Kertcher's high side and took the lead just past the race's midway point. Kertscher didn't give up and two would swap slide jobs on numerous ocassions, much to the delight of the many fans.
Meanwhile Steve Meyer worked his way to third patiently running the bottom of the track, and actually took second from Kertscher and closed in on Goeden. The events only red would fly as Mike Dubs spilled with just six laps remaining. Kertscher was able to slip by Meyer on the restart and challenge Goeden again for the top spot. With Goeden running the middle, Kertscher the high side, and Meyer the bottom, the crowd was on their feet. Action was plenty throughout the field with everyone still running on the lead lap.
Goeden would fend off the Kertscher attack and went on to claim the win. Meyer would come home third, with twelveth starting John Haeni putting in a solid run to claim fourth, and local favorite Dave Moulis completing the top five. Mike Reinke put on a late race high side charge to take sixth, with Tommy Sexton, Scott Young, Scott Biertzer, and hard charger Scott Uttech rounding out the top ten from his twenty-first starting position.
Reinke topped the thirty-nine car field in qualifying with heat wins going to Moulis, Sexton, Bill Warren, and Kertscher. The twin B-mains went to Brian Kristan and Haeni.
IRA "good guys" Todd King and Bill Wirth" suffered extensive damage to their cars in seperate heat race incidents.
IRA takes to road Memorial Weekend with visits to Superior (WI) Speedway on Friday, and then to Brainerd, MN on Saturday for their first ever visit to North Central Speedway.
