Weedsport, NY – May 21, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, Cayuga County Fair Speedway PR Director
The 2007 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series returns to action at the home of DIRTcar Racing NorthEast as the 16th Annual Hall of Fame Classic takes center stage at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on May 27. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and grandstand seating begins at 5 o’clock.
Sponsored by Labatt, a pair of 53-lap, $3,000-to-win Big-Block Modified main events make up round number three in the Advance Auto Parts SDS. DIRTcar Sportsman Modified and Street Stock action completes the holiday card with practice starting at 6 p.m. followed immediately by Integra Shocks Modified Time Trials and qualifying heats. The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club entries will also be in competition Sunday to fill out the big Memorial Day Weekend program. Adult general admission tickets are $20 each, Senior Citizens (65 yrs + over) $18, Students (10-14 yrs) $5 and Children (9 yrs. + under) Free. Camping on the fairgrounds is allowed for a minimal fee of $10 which includes electrical hook-up.
Danny Johnson became the first three-time winner of the DIRT Hall of Fame Classic last May at Cayuga County, holding off a late race rally by Gary Tomkins to garner the first tour triumph for his former car owner JIR Motorsports. Johnson is among the pre-race favorites to repeat on Sunday as he is already a perfect 3-for-3 at The Port in ‘07. Jimmy Phelps is the current Big-Block Modified points leader at Cayuga County while 2005 HoF Classic champion Tim Fuller tops the ’07 Advance Auto Parts Series points chart.
Four winners in four DIRTcar Sportsman main events have kept the companion open-wheel division among the most competitive at the high-banked 3/8-miler. Jeremy Pitcher heads the standings with one win to his credit as more than a third of the field remains equipped with crate motors. A $100 bonus award is up for grabs every week for any driver using a crate power plant able to pull into the winner’s circle.
Cayuga County’s full-fender competition has been just as fierce with only one repeat winner in eight main events. Dave Marcuccilli, Dave Mannise, Phil Marsden and Nick Rizzo have earned first-place trophies in the DIRTcar Street Stock ranks while Bill Werner (2), Jon Shumway and Karl Werner have taken checkered flags following early season BattleKarz triumphs.
The fifth race program of the season in Cayuga County follows the 16th Annual DIRT NorthEast Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies scheduled for 2 p.m. This year three drivers will be added to the Hall of Fame Museum's elite 'Wall of Fame': Canadian veteran Dave Heaslip, New Jersey standout Billy Osmun and transplanted New Yorker Dick May. Also receiving recognition will be Leonard J. Sammons Jr. Outstanding Contributions to Auto Racing Award winners Ron Morin and the late Aaron Freshman, Gene DeWitt Outstanding Car Owner Award recipient Jeff Rudalavage and Mechanic of the Year Mike Burdick. Co-recipients of the sixth annual Gater Racing News Outstanding Woman in Racing Award are Annette Lutz and Helen Martin.
