Quackenbush Takes Early Lead in Gater News Hard Charger of Season Standings presented by Red Bear Hand Cleaner
Rich Vleck, TULSA, Okla. (May 23, 2007) - The third year of rewarding drivers for moving forward in feature races is now started and yet again it is a driver with no career wins that is out in front.
Geoff Quackenbush is currently well out in front in the Gater Racing News Hard Charger of the Season Standings, this year presented by Red Bear Hand Cleaner. He has passed nearly twice as many cars as any other drivers, something that competitors and fans have noticed in the young 2007 season.
“Duck Shrub” was the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger of the Race in the season opener at Fulton, where he moved up from a 21st place start to round out the top-10. The next night he started much higher in 12th, but was still able to climb into the top-10, finishing in 7th.
The Quackenbush Motorsports Team has been on the race track plenty of times already in 2007, including the ASCS season opener at East Bay, the Bully Hill Nationals at Black Rock, and a pair of ASCS Mid-Atlantic Events, where the No. 25 had a 7th place showing at the Virginia Motor Speedway.
The Warwick, NY native will once again travel south this weekend as he goes to battle with the O’Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour at Susquehanna Speedway Park on Thursday and back to VMS on Friday and Saturday.
Now in his third full season of competing with the ASCS Patriot Region, the Alfred (NY) State Graduate is still in search of his first career win, something that a number of his competitors feel is right around the corner.
The 21-year-old currently sits 6th in ASCS Patriot Points and 5th in ASCS Mid-Atlantic Points, the position where he finished in the final ASCS Patriot Standings in 2006. Quackenbush is likely to be in the top-5 yet again this year as the season rolls along, with the next points races taking place at the beginning of June at Thunder Alley Speedpark and Brockville Speedway.
Quackenbush currently leads the Hard Charger Standings with 16 positions advanced, seven better than 2nd place Josh Weller. Weller did all of his passing in the opener at Fulton, where he recorded a top-5 showing. The Mertztown, PA driver is currently 5th in ASCS Patriot Points and like Quackenbush be in competition this weekend with the ASCS National Tour.
Chuck Hebing is the only other competitor to pass more than five cars in the first two ASCS Patriot events. “Cobra” won both races, but had to pass six cars at Rolling Wheels to do so. The winner of Friday Night’s portion of the Bully Hill NY Nationals has now added credibility to his 19 career ASCS wins and looks for a very difficult 20th this weekend at two tracks where he tested at towards the end of April.
Jared Zimbardi was the Champion of the Gater Hard Charger of the Season Award presented by Red Bear Hand Cleaner the first year it was established in 2005. Last season, Don Adamczyk cruised to the crown in his best season in a sprint car.
