Woodhull, NY…Event #3 of the 2007 BRP CanAm Series will take place on Memorial Day at Woodhull Raceway. This is a new event for the Series which has traditionally visited Woodhull Raceway in September. They will return for the September show, but Vern Wasson, Woodhull Raceway owner / promoter, has booked a second date for the BRP CanAm 360 late models at his very popular high banked Steuben County race track.
“Vern Wasson ask us to find a spot on our 2007 schedule for a second event at Woodhull when we were there last September. As the Series and individual race track schedules came together over the winter the Memorial Day date became the best option so we struck the deal,” reports Series director Bruce Thompson. Thompson adds, “Our race teams like the Woodhull track configuration. Our events there have been very competitive each year. Ed Carley won with Dick Bradigan’s car in 2004. Jeff Chesebro won there during a three race win streak in 2005. Jon Rivers bested a 35 car field last year. More important, we are delighted that Vern updated the technical specifications for weekly competition to align with Series specs. We believe that if all tracks adopted a single set to specs everyone will benefit. A great example is that McKean County regulars like the Millers [Dave and Bruce], Jeremy Wonderling, and others have been able to race at Woodhull this season when McKean was rained out. Larry Knowles, Sparky Hills, Bob Buono and others have competed at both Woodhull and Black Rock. A single set of specifications will work out better for all of the weekly tracks, the Series, and most important the race teams.”
Heading the list of entries are Paul Grigsby, Randy Hall, Larry Knowles, Jessica Pierce, and Glenn Whritenour. Grigsby and Knowles are tied for the Series point lead after two events. Hall won the Series event at Merrittville earlier this week. Jessica Pierce is the most recent Woodhull winner and Whritenour is the defending Woodhull champion.
Grigsby has earned 180 points in two Series events. The East Concord, NY racer has earned his points the hard way – from deep in the starting grid to finish third in both events. Grigsby started 18th at Black Rock and 17th at Merrittville. The spirited drives have earned him two DART Machinery Hard Charger $100 awards. However, the federal prison correction officer / counselor wants to win the race not Hard Charger!
Knowles has won weekly events at Woodhull and Black Rock already this season. He also won the BRP CanAm Series opener at Black Rock last month. The Black Rock win and a fifth place finish at Merrittville earlier this week have earned the Painted Post, NY driver 180 points.
Randy Hall will be attempting to double up and win both Queen Victory and Memorial Day Holiday Specials. Hall says, “We do not race on many Mondays. If we could win on back-to-back Mondays that would give the PR guys some trivia to research. I will help with the research if I win!”
Jessica Pierce is the only lady to have ever entered a BRP CanAm event. Her Series results show room for improvement. However, the Corning College freshman has won two weekly events at Woodhull during her two year stint behind the wheel of the J and F Race Shop late models fielded by Jesse Freberg.
Woodhull Champion Glenn Whritenour has entered only two Series events. The first was last September at Woodhull where he came from 27th at the start to 9th at the finish. Whritenour’s second Series start was last month at Black Rock Speedway where he was collected in an early race multi-car crash which resulted in a DNF.
These drivers and thirty something others will be racing for prize money posted by the Speedway plus bonuses which include F/A Products – Clevite Engine Parts heat race, Ed Carley Motorsports B-Main, DART Machinery Hard Charger, Performance Friction Brake of the Race, Suzuki Motorcycles & ATVs Luck, Absolute Powder Coating Rookie of the Race awards, the $500 Close Racing Supply Front Row Challenge and a portion of the $30,000 year end point fund.
