Mercer, PA.For the third time this season, but first since April 14 racing was cancelled at Mercer Raceway Park on Saturday night due to rain. Hazy sun graced the speedway throughout the day, while thunderstorms crept across Interstate 80 and south. The showers however moved north shortly after 4:30 p.m. The intensity of the rain picked up at 5 p.m. and with more showers on the way the racing program was cancelled. The pits were filling up with numerous new cars and many cars sitting outside the gates when the cancellation was made.
With the cancellation, the American Racer/Lias Tire Modified and Big Daddy's Speed Center Mod Lite make-up features from May 19 will be moved to June 9 along with the rescheduled "Meet Your Heroes" autograph night. The "Pack the Track Night" will not be reschedule; however, a second one will be held on August 4.
The Tire Express Stock Car and M&D Paving Mini Stock make-up features will be run this Saturday night, June 2. The "Jeff Hoffman Memorial" will feature the Modifieds in a 30-lap $2,000 to-win feature. The Sprint Cars will race for $1,500 to-win and the Stock Cars $500 to-win. The Mod Lites and Mini Stocks will also race for extra money. The event will be a pill draw.
"It's a shame that the weather ruined the night," stated owner Vicki Emig. "We put a lot of effort and promotion into the event and a lot of people were looking forward to the night. With the Jeff Hoffman Memorial special for the Modifieds this coming week we decided to move their make-up feature to June 9 along with the Mod Lites."
The All-American "Spring Nationals" World Championship Pulling event is on for Sunday, May 27. Gates open at 4 p.m. with pulling beginning at 6:30 p.m. In the event of rain, Monday, Memorial Day has been set with gates opening at 2:30 and pulling starting at 5 p.m.
Mercer Raceway Park is located minutes from both Interstate 79 and 80 just off Route 19 on Fairground Road in Mercer, Pa. Dirt track racing and quality family entertainment are presented weekly late March through September.
