Lynch and Felmlee take sprint features

HARTFORD, Ohio; May 26, 2007 - On Hero's Night at Sharon Speedway this season, the FANtastic Five hit the 3/8-mile oval for the fifth time, with Bob Felmlee (Sprints), Jeff Sharp (E-Mod), Del Rougeux (Modified), Dan Lewis (Stock) and Guy Griffin (Limited Sprint) were feature winners . Dwayne Clay (Stock) and Ed Lynch, Jr. (Sprint) took the checkered flag in the makeup features from May 19.

In the first makeup feature of the night featuring the Tom's Sewer and Drain Service Pure Stocks, Dwayne Clay drove his way to victory lane. Jarod Larson and Clay made up the front row in the makeup from May 19. The racing started fast and furious into turn No. 1, with Clay grabbing the early lead. Fourth-place starter Steve D'Apolito moved into second before the cars completed a lap. From there Clay and D'Apolito began their door-to-door battle for the top spot. Clay held a two car length lead over D'Apolito on the third circuit. One lap later, D'Apolito made his first move to the inside of Clay as the cars entered turn No. 1. Clay maintained the top spot despite intense pressure former track champion D'Apolito. Right behind the two leaders, Larson and Dan Lewis were in a battle of their own with five laps on the board. At the midway point of the 15-lap feature, D'Apolito and Clay remained in lockstep on the tacky Hartford oval. Clay caught traffic on the ninth lap, with D'Apolito looking for a place to make a move. Despite a debris yellow flag on lap No. 13, Clay weaved his way through the lapped traffic to take his first win of the 2007 season. D'Apolito crossed the finish line second, with Larson third, Mike Alley fourth and Ed Cornell fifth.

Second on the card was a 25-lap Warren Harley-Davidson Sprint feature from May 19, with Ed Lynch, Jr. notching his second victory of the season. Tait Hilbert III and Kevin Schaeffer occupied the top two spots when the green flag dropped on the Warren Harley-Davidson Sprint Car Division. Schaeffer got the quick jump on the rest of the field as the cars circulated on the first lap. Schaeffer held nearly a one straightaway lead over the battle for second featuring Dan Shetler and Russ Sansosti. Shetler made his way to second on the fourth lap with a nifty move on Sansosti. Lynch made his presence felt for the first time at the front on lap No. 6 with move on Sansosti that propelled him to third. As the leaders caught traffic, the top spot quickly turned into a three-car battle between Schaeffer, Shetler and Lynch. Lynch, the all-time feature win leader at Sharon Speedway, made a savvy move on Shetler in traffic as the cars exited turn No. 2 on the 12th lap. Lynch's move propelled his No. 2L machine to second. The yellow flag flew on lap No. 13 for an incident involving Jarod Larson and Jody Keegan. Schaeffer led the field back to the green on the restart, with Lynch in hot pursuit. "The Apollo Rocket" used grip in the middle of turn No. 4 to snag the lead away from Schaeffer on the 14th circuit. From there Lynch cruised away from the field. Behind Lynch, the scuffle for second heated up with Shetler and current point leader Bob Felmlee, who started in 13th. Felmlee was all over the bumper of Shetler, but could not find his way around. Nonetheless, Lynch coasted across the line with a sour sounding engine to secure his second feature win of the season at Sharon Speedway. Shetler was second with Felmlee third, Mike Kekich fourth and Schaeffer fifth.

In the second sprint feature of the night, Bob Felmlee became the first three-time winner at Sharon this season by going flag-to-flag in a dominating performance. Jack Sodeman, Jr. and Bob Felmlee paced the field to the green. Felmlee jetted out to the lead before the cars entered turn one. Felmlee then rocketed away from Sodeman and the rest of the field. He built a one straightaway advantage by the third circuit. Felmlee was still in complete control on the fifth lap with Sodeman second, Jody Keegan third and Dan Shetler fourth. Shetler and Keegan reeled in Sodeman in the battle for second as the field completed the 12th lap. Ed Lynch, Jr., who started 16th after an engine change, caught the battle for second on the 14th lap, making it a four-way scrap for second position. Shetler prevailed in the scuffle on lap No. 17, but Lynch followed him in third spot. Meanwhile, Felmlee held nearly a half lap lead over Shetler and Lynch as they battled for second. Lynch, who won the makeup feature earlier in the evening, used moisture on the bottom of turns 1 and 2 to snag second from Shetler. At this point, Lynch was looking for a yellow to have a chance at Felmlee. That caution came on lap No. 22 when Russ Sansosti spun in turn No. 4. On the restart, Felmlee sailed away from Lynch, as "The Apollo Rocket" had to deal with lapped traffic. Before Lynch could clear all of the lapped cars, Felmlee had built an insurmountable lead. Felmlee cruised to his third feature win of the 2007 season at Sharon Speedway. Lynch crossed the finish line in second, with Shetler third, Keegan fourth and Sodeman fifth. Felmlee and Kevin Schaeffer won the heat races.

In the Coy Bros. Trucking E-Mod Division, Jeff Sharp led the final 13 laps on his way to taking the 15-lap feature. Jack Young and Joe Gabrielson led the field to the green, with Young snagging the early edge. That lead was short-lived as Sharp garnered the top spot with a move on a restart following a lap No. 1 yellow flag. Young then slotted into second spot. Sharp pulled out to a 10 car length advantage over Young as the cars put four laps on the board. With five laps on the scoreboard, Sharp led Gabrielson, Clay and Young. At the midway point, Gabrielson still trailed leader Sharp by about 10 car lengths. The battle was for second, with Gabrielson, Clay and Alan Dellinger scrapping for the spot. Dellinger, who started ninth, moved his way to third with a move on the cushion of turn No. 2 as the cars circulated on the 14th lap. All this took place behind Sharp, as he went on to win the feature. Gabrielson wound up second, with Dellinger third, Dwayne Clay fourth and Young fifth. Sharp and Howard Fraley won the heat races.

Del Rougeux edged Rex King by .030 sec in a photo finish in the Gibson-Governor Insurance Modified feature. Dave Schrader and Russell King were on the front row for the 25-lap big block feature, with Schrader snagging the early lead. Rougeux, from third starting, powered his way to the lead low out of turn No. 4 on the second lap. Rob Curtis followed Rougeux to the top spot, as he wheeled his No. 86 machine to second spot. Rougeux took a five car length lead over Curtis and May 19 winner Jim Rasey. The yellow flag flew for smoke billowing from the rear of Russell King's machine on lap No. 11. On the restart, Rex King threaded the needle in a great three-wide pass to take third spot behind Rougeux and Curtis. The remaining 14 laps provided fans with a tremendous three-car battle for the top spot between Rougeux, Curtis and Rex King. Rougeux had his big block working on the cushion, while Curtis was hooked up on the bottom, and Rex King squeezed his way to the middle. The three big blocks circulated the dirt at Hartford three-wide for much of the 3/8-mile. Curtis edged his way to the lead on the bottom as the cars worked the 16th lap, but Rougeux and Rex King were right on his tail. Rougeux stole the top spot right back one lap later with momentum on the high side. With 20 laps on the board the top three cars had the crowd on its feet as you could hardly slip a piece of paper between the three big blocks. Rougeux held a slight edge over Curtis and Rex King as the three machines once again raced three-wide around the banking of the oval. As the cars entered turn No. 3 on the final lap, Rex King made his move, diving beneath Rougeux in turn No. 3, but Rougeux peddled his way to the checkered flag to take his second win of the season. King was second with Curtis third. The top three cars were separated by just .4 sec. Brian Swartzlander was fourth and Rob Kristyak finished fifth. Swartzlander and Rex King took the checkered flag in the two heat races.

In the Tom's Sewer and Drain Service Pure Stocks, Dan Lewis drove to victory lane in the second stock feature of the night. Larry Root took the early lead after starting on the pole position. Root held a five car length lead over Stan Woomer in second. Steve D'Apolito moved his way to second spot on a lap No. 5 restart. Three laps later, Dan Lewis, who started 15th, found his way to second on the high side of turn No. 4. From there Lewis set sail after Root. He made his move on the bottom of turn No. 2 with 11 laps on the board. D'Apolito followed right in Lewis' tracks around Root. Lewis pulled out to a 10 car length lead over D'Apolito before a yellow flag slowed the field on lap No. 13. Despite the yellow, Lewis coasted to his second feature win this season. D'Apolito was second, with Root third, Sonny Wisler fourth and Tony Spaghetti fifth. In heat race action, Will Aley, Jamie Duncan and Dwayne Clay took victories.

Guy Griffin was victorious in the 15-lap Limited Sprint Car feature. Nate Stein grabbed the early lead after Kyle Layton started on the pole, but Griffin was in hot pursuit. Griffin has his No. 11 machine hooked up on the cushion of the oval as he reeled in Stein. However, Griffin dove to the bottom of the speedway to take the lead on lap No. 9, but Stein came right back. Before 10 laps were on the board, Griffin was in firm control of the feature. He dominated the remaining five laps, taking his third feature win. Stein finished in second. Nick Miller wound up third, Eric Williams was fourth and Layton finished fifth. Stein won the only heat race.
