BROCKVILLE-Fans were reminded on Saturday night of a little track history when a pair of Billings visited victory lane at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Denzil Billings celebrated 50 years behind the wheel of a race car with a Vintage car feature victory while Steve Billings grabbed top honours in the 15 lap Street Stock race.
Denzil started up front in the 15 lap Vintage event and led all the way easily outdistancing last year's track champion Ben Tucker. Steve meanwhile had to rebound from mechanical problems early on opening night and with alot of work over the last week had the 3 car ready to go. Billings won his heat and led all the way in the 15 lap event only to have a late challenge from Robin Perrin to withstand. The race was red flagged early after Derek Cryderman lost a wheel and flipped his 420 car. He wasn't injured. Billy Code, Dana Aikens and Charles Barkley rounded out the top five.
The 30 lap 358 Modified event started with the bang with a multi car crash on lap 2 in the first turn that at least 10 cars were involved in, with John Mulder ending up upside down. After a delay to clear the track, Doug Herbison who also won a rare heat race earlier in the night, zoomed into the lead. Chris Jones erased that advantage on a restart to take over the top spot. Meanwhile, Stephane LaFrance was working himself up from the back of the pack, the Little Hammer soon dispensed with Jones and led the rest of the way for the win with Mike Adderly a couple of car lengths back at the finish. Jones settled for third in front of teenager Bobby Herrington and Bryan Rogers.
Jason Riddell led from start to finish in capturing the 20 lap DIRT Sportsman feature. Riddell had the fastest car all evening and other than a late charge on a restart from defending track champ Chris Raabe was not even tested for the win. Raabe thanks to a couple of great passes on restarts was second trailed by Kees Van Winden, Ryan Poole and Randy Earl.
Joe Banks roared out to a half lap lead in the 16 lap Rookie event only to have a caution flag bunch the field back up with 4 laps to go. Banks wasn't bothered by the change in fortunes as he still pulled away from Steve Barber for the win. Adam Trickey was third followed by Josh Kane and Chris Lloyd. Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action Saturday night, June 2nd with the first appearance of the 2007 by the ASCS Patriot Sprint Cars featuring local favourite Rickey Wilson. the green flag drops at 7pm.
