Yoakam, Bibler, and Holderman Grab the Big Checks
(Lima, OH) The 9th Annual Memorial Cup was held at Limaland Motorsports Park under a constant threat of rain. A brief shower mid-afternoon caused the track crew to work a little harder to get the racing surface ready for the 96 race teams who would arrive to take their shot at winning one of Limaland's biggest annual events.
With so many cars in each division, the heat races were very critical to every driver. The EFI-NRA Sprint Invaders heats were won by Mike Dussel, JR Stewart, and Jared Horstman. Shane O'Connor, Tony Anderson, Casey Luedeke, and Nick Rosselit won their respective heats in the Professional Computer Company Modifieds. The Bud Thunderstock heat races were won by Jason Jimerson, Tim Rostorfer, and Tim Bowen.
Spits of rain fell from the sky as the EFI-NRA Sprint Invaders took to the track for their 25-lap, $2000.00 to win, feature race. Phil Gressman, winner of the Run for the Rabbit, had the pole with Dennis Yoakam, who destroyed his second car of the year last week, to his outside. Gressman led the first six laps before Yoakam used the low-line to take the lead on lap seven. Ron Blair made contact with the turn three wall and flipped his car on lap eight. Yoakam, Gressman, Mike Dussel, Jared Horstman, and Mike Dunlap were the top five cars on the restart. Yoakam held a small lead for the next twelve laps while Dussel and Gressman argued over second place. Ryan Grubaugh took a tumble coming out of turn four and stopped the race for the second time. Yoakam quickly pulled away on the restart and Gressman passed Dussel on the high-side for second. Dennis Yoakam collected his first win of the 2007 NRA campaign.
Andy Bibler and Todd Sherman occupied the Professional Computer Company Modifieds feature front row. Todd Sherman built both cars and interestingly enough, Bibler was sitting in Sherman's 2006 race car while Sherman was piloting Frankie Luchini's 2006 car. Sounds like a soap opera! Either way, two fast drivers were ready to attack the famed high-banks of Limaland Motorsports Park. Bibler took the early lead with Sherman in tow. Contact between Shane O'Connor and Buzz Jacobs brought out the only caution of the race. Bibler maintained his lead on the restart and held off Sherman for his first victory at Limaland Motorsports Park. A very emotional Bibler told the cheering crowd, "Over the last eight years, I've torn up a lot of race cars, made a lot of mistakes and dreamed of winning here. To win at Limaland, against the very best drivers, means everything. THIS IS AWESOME!!!!" Bibler's win was extremely popular with his fellow drivers and he was last seen with a mob of people who were showering him with praise.
Thirty Bud Thunderstocks came to claim the victory. Twenty made the feature. Earnie Woodard and Andy Holderman led them to the green flag. Holderman snatched the lead away from Woodard by the backstretch and waved goodbye to the field. The Thunderstock drivers displayed excellent car control while keeping their emotions in check as they clicked off 15 consecutive green-flag laps. Holderman, who admitted he was having a tough season after his win in the evening's McDonald's Dash for Cash, spoke about his win, "we didn't change much after the heat race. The car felt good and we had a great starting position. Earnie showed me his nose and I moved down a bit to take away his line. This is a good win for us."
Your next chance to be part of the celebration of 72 years of racing action is next week when Limaland Motorsports Park and Darrell and Ora Brown present the 8th Annual Steve Brown Memorial which pays $1000 to win for the Bud Thunderstocks. The Professional Computer Company Modifieds and Elwer Fence Sprints will also be in action on Ohio's Quarter-Mile of Thunder. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and racing on America's premier quarter-mile begins at 7:30 p.m.
