CLEARFIELD, PA - Robbie Blair of Hydetown picked up his first ever victory at Central Pennsylvania Speedway on Sunday evening, as he won the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series first ever stop at the Clearfield oval.
Rusty Martz of Brookville was also able to tame the Big Bear as he garnered a win in the exciting street stock feature.
Ricky Elliott and Robbie Blair brought the 24 car MACS Late Models to the start of the 50 lap test with Elliott taking the lead and pulling away from the competition, but then seventh place starter Jason Covert was headed to the front and was reeling in the leader. Lap 11 spelled disaster for Covert as he lost a rear tire in turn four after he snapped an axle.
He retired from the race, which allowed Robbie Blair to take over the lead and set the pace. Like Elliott, Blair began to open up a nice lead but Jeremy Miller, who started fourth and faded early on, was looking good and he decided to try the outside of the track and it was working for him.
On lap 37 the outside worked as Miller took the lead, but it was short lived as Blair fought back and regained the lead on lap 39 but four laps later, while still working the high side of the speedway, Miller once again went high and took the lead from Blair on lap 43 with Blair houding Miller once again and one lap later he made it work as he was back in the lead and this time he opened up enough of a lead to keep his challengers at bat.
The top five finishers included Blair, Miller, Rod Conley, Mike Balzano and Jack Pencil. Heat wins went to Ricky Elliott, Mike Balzano, Jason Covert, Robbie Blair and Jeremy Miller.
The street stock feature was exciting as well with Rusty Martz and Tim Krape on the front row. Mart took the lead at the start with Craig Bainey in second and Krape falling to third. They ran that way for a short time with Dan Smeal eventually working his way to fourth and eventually to second to battle for the lead, but Fuzzy Fields was right there and he wasn’t about to let Smeal keep the position without a fight.
As the race entered the 12th lap Fields and Smeal tangled in the first turn, causing a caution. As the crash was being cleaned up the ambulance was summoned to the pits.
When the race resumed with only eight laps to go, leader Martz found World of Outlaw Sprint driver Danny “The Dude” Lasoski in second place. The race for the lead heated up significantly with Lasoski going to the low side and Martz to the outside. The pair was side-by-side more than once as Lasoski often led, but never officially at the line, that was always Martz who was edging out front.
The crowd was on its feet as the duo came off the fourth turn with only inches to spare for a win, as Lasoski was pulling into the lead and looking for the winners circle. At the waving of Mike Frisco’s double checkered flags it was Martz that took the win by only centimeters as Lasoski was right beside Martz at the line in what track officials are calling the closes win ever at the track. The top five were: Martz, Lasoski, Krape, Smeal and Gary Little. Heat wins were collected by Tim Krape, Rusty Martz, Craig Bainey and Brandon Connor. Rick Hemphill won the shortened B-Main.
PIT NOTES: There were 46 late models and 32 street stocks in the pits…Lasoski said this was the first time he ever drive a full-bodied stock car…There were five states represented in the late model feature including PA, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia and Delaware…Ricky Elliott set the fast time of 18.084 seconds…The next event at the speedway is the annual Yankee Doodle 50. This year its scheduled for July 3 and the BRP Modifieds and street stock will return…For more information check the website at www.cantralpaspeedway.con.
