KIRKWOOD, NY…After a week off the Modified division returned to action at Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday night and Stewart Friesen returned to victory lane as he has done on two prior occasions in 2007. Nick Rochinski recorded his first ever Sportsman victory with Gary Dence collecting his first IMCA Modified win of 2007. Charlie Gilbert was the Pure Stock victor with Rodney Kistler notching the Keystone Legends victory. The Northeast Vintage Car win went to Mike Murphy with Andy Brigham collecting honors in the Lightning Cats.

Gary Griffin and Barry White earned their way to front row starting spots in the 30 lap Modified feature on Saturday. At the drop of the green White hustled out to the lead taking advantage of the outside of the quarter mile. White motored out front as Brian Malcom and Eric Palmer battled Griffin for position. Back in the field J.R. Crouse, Friesen and Jim Crawn began to work their way through the field. On lap 9 Palmer, a Modified rookie worked past White for the lead but it wouldn’t be long before he would have to contend with a hard charging Friesen. A caution on lap 14 would bunch up the field and find Friesen next to Palmer on the restart. Palmer held the advantage briefly as Friesen motored past for the top spot. Crouse and Crawn broke into the top five from their respective starting spots of 11th and 15th.

During the late stages Crouse tried to close in on Palmer for second but Palmer had other thoughts as he began to reel in Friesen in lapped traffic. This left Crouse and Malcolm in a heated battle for third place with Griffin and Crawn remaining close behind. Friesen would navigate lapped traffic to perfection to go on for his third victory of the season. Palmer held on for his best Modified finish to date by coming home in second. Malcolm snuck past Crouse for third with Crawn getting by Griffin for the fifth marker at the finish. Only two cautions slowed the 30 lap feature event that took just over ten minutes to complete. Should Friesen win again on Saturday, June 2nd a substantial bounty will be put into effect.

Nick Rochinski led wire to wire to record his first ever Sportsman victory at the Point on Saturday. The Dickson City Express took the lead from his outside front row starting spot and never looked back. Butch Klinger took advantage of typical racey track conditions to advance from his 16th starting spot to finish in the runner up position in the 20 lap event. Rick Raisner had yet another steady run to wind up in third with Jamie Batzel and Jerry Tonti completing the top five.

Gary Dence took advantage of his front row starting spot after the early start of his season has been plagued with bad luck. Dence led all 20 laps in the IMCA Modified feature to record his first win of the season. Even though he led the distance Dence had to contend with Modified hotshoe James Cornell in the late stages. Cornell has taken over the team Menard ride and applied the heat in the final laps. At the finish it was Dence, Cornell, Gary Roberts, Joe Cole and John Rohacevich completing the top five.

Mechanical problems once again struck Doug Stack in the 20 lap Pure Stock feature. For the third time this season Stack had mechanical woes strike while leading the feature event. Eugene VanAlstyne continued to impress as he led the first four circuits of the feature before Stack took over on lap 5. Feature winner Charlie Gilbert made his way past last weeks winner Harry Marvin, III as Stack began to slow on lap 12. Gilbert went on to lead the remainder of the way for his second victory of the season. Rob Loucks had his best season finish in second with Steve Polhamus, Chad Stone and Josh Towner completing the top five.

The Keystone Legends feature victory went to Rodney Kistler. Kistler led the final 9 laps enroute to the victory. This was the Legends first of three visits to the speedway in 2007. Mike Murphy was the Northeast Vintage Modified victor. Murphy led the entire 20 laps. This was the clubs only visit to the speedway in 2007. The Lightning Cat winner was Andy Brigham. For Brigham it was his second win of the season.
