DAVIS TAKES FIRST WIN AT DEER CREEK

By Bill Nelson

May 26th, 2007

Spring Valley MN

With rain showers in the morning and threatening weather until three in the afternoon promoters often wonder about the business. With the weather breaking though Deer Creek Speedway was blessed with great car counts and an awesome crowd on hand for this Memorial Day weekend special featuring the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series. A total of 99 cars checked into the back gate with 57 USMTS modifieds on hand from all over the Midwest, Oklahoma and Texas. As the temperatures cooled throughout the afternoon and early evening the racing action heated up and the final feature of the night had the full house standing on its feet during the Greenway Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge.

After their heat race action the first feature of the night was the 20-lap US Army WISSOTA Super Stock feature with heat race winners Nick Herrick and Cole Queensland starting in the middle of the thirteen car feature field. Fresh off his win at Tri-Oval speedway on Friday night Adam Stockhausen looked to continue to make his presence in the Super Stock class starting on the outside of the front row, alongside Wyatt Wolfe Jr. Exiting turn two on the first lap Stockhausen gained control as a 4-wide race for second followed him down the backstraight. Chris Klinger took over the second position followed by Chris Groth. With three down Groth and Klinger raced side by side for second with Klinger holding the preferred middle groove and holding onto the spot. On the next lap Groth moved into second while Ed Sanders and Kevin Hager sat in fourth and fifth position. Nine to go and Klinger was being persued by Sanders as he tried to take over the third position. A caution that sent Groth to the rear on the next lap saw Cole Queensland and Chris Quast racing for fourth while Groth set out to work back up through the field. Another caution for debris flew with seven to go. On the restart Stockhausen regained his control up front with Klinger in second, Sanders in third and Groth, Quast and Hager racing for the fourth spot. Quast spun out of contention two laps later allowing Queensland to join the Hager, Groth battle to the finish. Stockhausen held on for his first feature win of the season at the speedway followed by Klinger and Sanders.

Heat winners for the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were Chris Adams, Jerry Young, Jimmie Arnold and Kenny Wytaske with Andrew Wiste winning the “B” feature. Jerry Young received the pole position and lined up alongside of Jeff Brauer for the 18-lap feature event. Brauer immediately took control of the point as Young and Brandon Davis raced for second early on. With fourteen to go Kenny Wytaske moved around Young to take over second with Davis in fourth. Three laps later the top two were pulling away from the field as Young and Davis now raced for third. Brauer and Wytake had a great race up front for the lead as they crossed the line side by side with seven to go. Unfortunately a caution that sent Brauer to the tail set up the final five laps for the checkers. On the restart Wytaske rocketed into the lead with David in second. After transferring from a “B” feature Bryan Hernandez was the man on the charge as he sat in third. Jimmie Arnold split Chris Adams and Albert Wytaske to take over the fourth spot on the restart. A final caution with two to go for a spinning Adams set up the final dash. Davis, Hernandez and Arnold were all close in the race for second, coming out of four to the checkers though K. Wytaske had a flat tire allowing Davis to sneak by on the low side for the win, Wytaske held on for second with Arnold crossing the line in third.

The 40-lap Greenway Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge for the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series $2,000 to win event was up next. All 24 starting drivers came out on the front stretch while the track crew did a quick resurfacing of the speedway for driver introductions. The drivers sat on the wall and were introduced one by one and commented on their season with track announcer Todd Narveson. The top eight in passing points redraw for starting spots and tonight those eight went into the crowd to select a lucky kid each to come draw their starting spots for them. Kelly Shryock had won eleven features at the speedway coming into the night and was lucky again as his little fan picked the #2 starting spot for him in the main event. A loud groan rolled through the stands when his starting spot was announced as many feared another run away win by the 3 car. Corey Dripps and Shryock ran side by side for the first three corners until they were joined by Brad Waits three wide at the completion of lap one. Shryock took the lead with Waits moving into second. Five laps completed and Dripps pulled up lame on the topside of the speedway ending his night. On the restart Mike Hejna moved alongside of Waits for second with Mark Noble in fourth. Twenty seven to go and Greg Skaggs moved under Jason Hughes for fifth. Another restart with twenty six to go saw Waits in second behind Shryock with Hughes and Hejna side by side for third and tons of side by side racing action through the rest of the field. Twenty to go and Waits moved a little higher on the speedway and started to work in a top groove. After getting close to making the pass a couple times exiting turn four on lap twenty four Waits flew by Shryock for the lead. Fourteen to go and lapped traffic was coming into play quickly as they now raced side by side through the traffic. Thirteen to go and Shryock again led as Waits struggled with a lapped car. The two worked through the lapped traffic while Hughes slowly gained ground on them in third. Five to go and Waits again closed in on the lead and for the next five laps went nose to tail around the speedway. As they crossed the line for the white the crowd rose to their feet again as they went side by side for the lead. Shryock held on for the exciting win with Waits and Hughes rounding out the top three.

Racing action returns next Saturday night with the return of the 6:00 start time and racing action in all five regular classes.
