Noonan suprises Eldora field.

ROSSBURG, OH (May 27) -- Following Sunday night’s Sunoco American Late Model Series (ALMS) conquest at Eldora Speedway, Casey Noonan is a firm believer in the old adage, “the bigger they are, the harder they fall”. Noonan drove the race of his life to best a stellar field of entrants and garner his first-ever Eldora triumph. Meanwhile, Dale Blaney took advantage of a rare night away from 410 Sprint racing to capture the NRA (National Racing Alliance) Sprint Invaders main event and Mike Dirksen took advantage of Jeff Babcock’s misfortune to take home the Advance Auto Parts Stock Car victory.

By virtue of his heat race win and the luck of the draw, Tim McCreadie started on the pole of the ALMS feature. Based on McCreadie’s track record, to many observers, that meant the rest of the field would be running for second.

Not to deny them, when the green flag flew, McCreadie was out and flying; leaving the balance of the field in a tense battle.

With a ten car lead, the battle for second on back could have been covered with a virtual blanket. Steve Casebolt and Darrell Larnigan were side by side in their chase for second, while fourth was being hotly contested by Chris Ross, Noonan and Ted Loomis.

With a multi-grooved surface, the drivers utilized the full 90’ width and had the crowd in awe. The fast pace an swapping of positions among the top six distracted from the drive being put forth by Patrick Sheltra and Brian Ruhlman, from deep in the field.

When the event’s first caution came out it was a heartbreaker for Casebolt. His hood became dislodged and flew off, with the resulting caution flag, he had to be relegated to the rear of the field. Just at that moment, Noonan had turned in a strong pass of Lanigan and found himself runner-up on the restarted. In two laps, he startled McCreadie by pulling not only alongside, but ahead of him to take the lead.

Right behind him, all the way from 20th was Sheltra, and those two promptly stole the show with their fierce battle that continued to the dropping of the checkered flag. The elated Noonan won by inches. Following them across the line were Scott James (from 12th), Lanigan and McCreadie.

No sooner had the dust settled from that barnburner, than the NRA Sprints came out to provide yet another thriller. Mike Dussell shot into the early lead, with Mike Brecht in hot pursuit. By lap 6, Brecht had built up enough momentum to shoot past Dussel, with Blaney right on his tail.

Blaney tried high and low for several laps before he came up with the right combination at the mid-point of the event to take the lead he was to hold to the finish. Brecht hung on for runner-up honors, while team mate Greg Wilson had the fastest car near the closing stages, but couldn’t overcome the front running duo; having to settle for third. Dussell and Dennis Yoakam completed the top five.

Heartbreak was the name of the game for Babcock. Going for his second consecutive feature win, and coming down for the white flag, a spinning car collected Babcock. With the damage extensive enough to prohibit any further racing, the top spot was inherited by Mike Dirksen, who cruised the remaining distance to the victory.

The extremely racy track found 12th place starter Barney Craig moving into second at the finish, followed in order by Bob Burch (from 14th), Josh Morton and Doug Matheny. --30--
