Dixon Wins First Ever BRP CanAm Event

Posted by Tom Ames  |  05/29/07

Woodhull, NY…Steve Dixon won his first ever BRP CanAm Series event on Memorial Day evening at Woodhull Raceway. Dixon had his best finish ever as runner-up at Merrittville last week and came back tonight to do even better!

Dixon, the second generation race car driver from Smethport, PA, lead a McKean County Raceway sweep of the podium spots. Dixon, Jeff Chesebro, and Randy Hall are all weekly competitors at McKean County Raceway. Dixon and Chesebro both live in Smethport, McKean County, PA.

Dixon took the lead from Jeff Chesebro with a power move on the bottom of turn two on lap 16 and never changed his line for the balance on the 30 lap contest. His Irons Farms / Fitzsimmons Construction CRS Monte Carlo did not show a single dent or tire mark in Victory Lane.

Chesebro showed as the leader of laps 2 – 15 after wrestling the top spot from pole sitter Jon Lichy. Chesebro, a 2005 Series winner at Woodhull, was never able to pull away from Dixon and the 26 other anxious warriors, in part, due to a rash of caution periods that plagued the event. The fact that his Chese’s Performance Exhaust / Follman Rental Properties CRS Monte Carlo had NO brakes for most of the second half did not help.

Randy Hall, the defending Series Champion and Merrittville winner last Monday, was hoping for a back-to-back Monday sweep. Hall had nothing for Dixon or Chesebro tonight and settled for the show spot in the final tally.

Jimmy Johnson drove his Mike Ognibene Ford / Zoladz Limo Shaw Fusion from 26th to fourth in a very impressive showing on Vern Wasson’s tight high banked Steuben County oval. Johnson actually passed Hall for third on lap 26, but fell back to fourth in his Hot Rod Lincoln, the only Ford powered car of the 35 entries. Johnson is undefeated in four starts at his home track, Genesee Speedway.

Mikey Wonderling returned to BRP CanAm Series competition after missing the Merrittville show due to engine problems. The youngest of the three Wonderling brothers in the field lead Mike and Debby’s boys to the payoff window with a very strong fifth place finish.

Wayne Robertson, Jon Rivers, Brady Wonderling, Tim Dunham, and Quinn Sutherland completed the top ten finishers in the marathon contest which took 58 minutes to complete.

F/A Products – Clevite Engine Parts heat race winners were Bob Buono, Glenn Whritenour, Dave Miller, and Randy Hall

Ed Carley Motorsports B-Main winners were Rich Marlott and Jason Knowles

Both front row starters, Jon Lichy and Steve Dixon, declined the $500 Close Racing Supply Front Row Challenge.

The $100 Performance Friction Brake of the Race Award winner was Donnie Smith. Smith’s brake [break] was bad when he was involved in a lap 14 incident while running 5th. Smith’s Jim Schuyler lead crew made repairs, but it cost the Dundee driver two laps in the pits and a resulting 19th place finish.

Brady Wonderling won both the Brad Penn Pole Cat award for the second event in a row.

Paul Grigsby was the Suzuki Motorcycles & ATVs Hard Luck award recipient after a very tough night will a series of being in the wrong place at the wrong time deals.

The next Series event is Sunday June 10 at Humberstone Speedway in Port Colborne, Ontario. Humberstone gates will open at 4:30 with racing at 6:30. Track information at www.HumberstoneSpeedway.com. Series information at www.BRPCanAmSeries.com
