Josh McGuire, Grayson, KY captured his career first Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) event during the inaugural ‘Stars and Stripes 50’ presented by Steele Excavating at Brent and Kathy Steele’s Skyline Speedway, Stewart OH. The hard fought victory found McGuire starting 16th.
Conley and Steve Shaver paced the stellar 24-car starting field starting field to green with Rod quickly taking the lead. Bart Hartman utilized his fifth place start to jump into second by conclusion of lap two. Hartman and Shaver battled back and forth for second during the first five laps until Rick Auckland overtook Shaver for third on the sixth lap.
Conley, Hartman, and Auckland maintained the top three spots until Shaver came coasting to a stop on the backstretch bringing out the first of three cautions. By this juncture on lap 11, McGuire had raced his way into the top five.
On the ensuing, newly implemented ‘ Delaware ’ style restart, Conley would hold onto the lead with McGuire making his way into third behind the leader and Auckland . On lap 15, Shaver came to rest for the second time in turn three as he brought out the second caution. Conley still manned the point, over Auckland , McGuire, Hartman, and Jeremy Miller, rounding out the top five.
When racing resumed, McGuire blazed past Auckland on the high side grabbing second. One circuit later McGuire would put his DJ’s Kitchen Corner/GCP Racing Engines/Baby Cat Trucking/Glenny Glass/D+C Salyers Construction/Poske Performance Parts/CJ Rayburn Race Cars Blue and Black # 41 GTO too the outside of Conley trying to snare the lead. McGuire used his momentum on the outside to slingshot around Conley for the lead on lap 17. Shortly after McGuire took the lead the third and final caution waved for a multi-car incident involving 2005 MACS Champion Mike Balzano, 2006 World of Outlaws Late Model Series ROYear Eddie Carrier Jr., Shaver, and local favorite Freddie Carpenter.
On the final restart, Josh pulled away from the field while 2004 MACS Champion Robbie Blair made his way into the top four, from his 17th place starting spot. The ageless veteran and National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductee Delmas Conley glided into fifth.
As McGuire entered lapped traffic his lead slowly started to disintegrate as Auckland raced his way onto the leader’s rear decklid with 15 laps remaining. On lap 36, Auckland got underneath McGuire grabbing the lead. McGuire would not relent as he never permitted Auckland out of his sight. He stayed glued right on Rick’s bumper.
The two stayed nose to tail until lap 48 when McGuire would pull nearly even trying to retake the lead in dramatic style. McGuire found the little extra ‘bite’ he needed coming off of turn four taking the lead as the white flag was displayed. McGuire held Auckland at bay thwarting Rick’s last ditch effort to retake the lead and snaring the $5,000 top prize. The win was McGuire’s career first MACS checkered. Auckland settled for second over Dave Hess, Jr from tenth; Blair, and Rod Conley.
Rounding out the top ten were 2006 MACS Champion Racin’ Jason covert, from 19th; Delmas Conley, from ninth; Hartman, Donnie Moran, from 11th; and Tim Dohm from 12th.
