Robbie Blair Picks Up First MACS Win Of Season At Central PA Speedway

Posted by Late Model Editor  |  05/29/07

2004 Mid-Atlantic Championship Series Champion Robbie Blair, Centerville, PA, held off a hard charging Jeremy Miller for his first MACS win of the season, Sunday, May 27, during the Series first ever appearance at Dan Russell’s Central Pennsylvania Speedway.

A large, excited crowd saw former Big-Block Modified standout Ricky Elliot and Blair bring the 24-car starting field to green with Elliott bolting out front. A quick caution appeared on the second lap slowing the field placing Blair and 2002 MACS champion Jack Pencil directly behind the race leader for the ‘ Delaware ’ style restart.

When the green reappeared, seventh starting and 2006 MACS Champion Jason Covert made a daring move to get by both Blair and Pencil for the second spot coming out of turn two. Covert was slowly inching his way to the fleet Elliott until disaster struck the former champion. Jason snapped an axle going into turn three and ground to a stop in turn four ruining his chances to win the 50-lap Russell Stone main event.

The race resumed with Elliott holding on to the point followed by Blair and MACS point leader ‘Hot’ Rod Conley. Elliott again blasted out to a commanding lead when he got a little too low in turn three nicking the inside berm bending the front bumper up underneath his #45 Rocket chassis. The damage was significant enough to halt the race leader in turn two bringing out the caution. That turn of events handed the lead over to Blair on lap 19 followed by Pencil, Conley, Mike Balzano and Jeremy Miller.

Blair, now in front, set a lightning fast pace for the next seven laps until the final caution flew for local hot-shoe Waylon Wagner who slowed on the front stretch with front end damage. When action resumed on lap 27, Miller blew by Conley on the high side to take over the runner-up spot. Blair hugged the bottom of the race track while Miller hounded Robbie from the outside. The battle for the win was awesome with Blair and Miller putting on a FANtastic display.

Fans were on their feet screaming as the duo battled their way through lapped traffic racing side-by-side as they swapped the lead back and fourth around the 3/8th mile oval. Eventually Robbie was able to clear the lapped cars and clearly establish the lead. Blair went on to take the thrilling victory claiming his 11th career MACS victory. Robbie was closely followed by Miller; Conley; 2005 MACS Champion, Mike Balzano; and Pencil all rounded out the top five. Matt Gaston led the next flight of five drivers finishing sixth over Jim Bernheisel, from 22nd; Nick Dickson, from 17th; Dan Stone, from 18th; and Doug Drown.
