BREWERTON, NY – Willy Decker of Vernon won his first ever DIRTcar Modified 35-lap feature at Brewerton Speedway last Friday in controversial fashion over Alan Johnson on Bradco Supply Night. Decker drove deep into the third turn under Johnson on the while flag lap, made contact, and rode off to a $1,500 victory behind the wheel of the Westmoreland Golf Club, Bicknell No. 1x. Other winners were Dale Caswell in the IMCA Modifieds, Dan Williams in the ESDCA Mod Lites, Matt Wetterer in the 4-Cylinder Super Stocks, and Josh Herbert in the Enduros.
The race fans of Brewerton Speedway will be talking about the finish of the 35-lap feature event for the headline DIRTcar Modifieds for quite some time as tempers and tensions flared as the checkers flew. Willy Decker came from the ninth starting position to take the lead from Roy Bresnahan on lap 16 before last week’s winner Alan Johnson took command on lap 21.
Late in the race, second place Decker began working hard, looking for a way around as Johnson began slipping high somewhat in the turns. On the white flag lap, Decker dove underneath Johnson in turn three with a groove available down low as the two made contact. With the fans raised to their feet, Johnson bobbled up high and Decker rode onto this first career Brewerton win. A huge throng of Decker fans piled into victory lane as Johnson voiced his displeasure with Decker at the scales
An excited Decker commented in victory lane following his win. “Alan was a little unhappy with me and said he raced me clean. But, seems to forget the last few weeks when he was running everyone over. Alan kept leaving the bottom open every lap so we went for it. Alan would of done the same thing and Danny would of definitely would of done it.”
At the finish, it was Decker over Johnson by .606 seconds, followed by Jim Witko Jr., Tom Sears Jr., Dan Vauter, Mike Bowman, Kenny Stafford, Johnny Hill, Kyle Lewis, and Joe Isabell. Hill led the first two circuits until Bresnahan took command on lap 3. Alan Johnson leads Willy Decker by six points in the standings, and an important rivalry has surely begun.
Dale Caswell of West Monroe was the victor in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature event. The victory for Caswell, who came from the tenth position, was his third straight on the 2007 season. Rich Townsend was the early leader until Caswell took command on lap 6.Following Caswell, it was Pete Anderson, Kevan Cook, Greg Kimball, and Rich Riggs.
Dan Williams of Pennellville won his fifth straight feature in the ESDCA Mod Lite division and remains undefeated to date. Second was Matt Magner, third was Ken Gamlen, fourth was Justin Crisafulli, and fifth was Doug Williams. Williams came from the eighteenth starting position to take the lead from Ken Gamlen at the halfway point of the 20-lap feature. Joe Gwilt led the initial circuit.
Matt Wetter of Georgetown won his first career 15-lap 4-Cylinder Super Stock feature in dramatic fashion over Claude Hutchings Jr., Chuck Powelczyk, Chad Dupra, and Matt Fay. Wetter came from the ninth starting position and took the lead from early leader Aron Backus on lap 8 enroute to his victory.
Josh Herbert won his third 20-lap 4-Cylinder Enduro main event of the 2007 season. Hebert beat Jerry Curcie Jr., Devon Rookey, Chris Bonoffski, and Jon Shumway to the finish line.
