Kinser Outduels Saldana For Fourth World of Outlaws Win at Sharon Speedway
King Kinser uses bottom of speedway to take sixth win of season
HARTFORD, Ohio; June 1, 2007 - Steve Kinser was the star among stars in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series' ninth visit to the 3/8-mile oval at Sharon Speedway on Friday after diving below Joey Saldana on the bottom of the Sharon oval en route to his sixth win this season.
After 37 sprints checked into the pit area, Jason Martin set the quickest time in single car qualifying (13.172 sec, 102.490 MPH). Sharon Speedway regular Bob Felmlee was second quickest (13.175 sec.), with Jason Solwold third (13.197 sec.), Justin Henderson fourth (13.203 sec.) and Zach Chappell fifth (13.220 sec).
After a few adjustments in the pits, the stars of the Outlaws took to the Hartford dirt for heat racing. The top five finishers in all four heats earned slots in the starting field for the A-Main. Rob Chaney of Wooster, Ohio led all eight laps of heat No. 1 on his way to earning the victory. Quick qualifier Martin, was second, with Daryn Pittman third, Chappell fourth and Paul McMahan fifth. In the second heat race, Saldana threaded the needle from the second row to grab the top spot before the cars exited the second turn. From there, "The Brownsburg Bullet" cruised to the win. "King" Kinser crossed the line in second, Felmlee drove to a third place finish, with Tim Shaffer fourth and Jason Sides rounding out the cars transferring to the A-Main from the second heat. The all-time feature win leader at Sharon Speedway, Ed Lynch, Jr., took the victory in the third heat. Solwold finished second, "Hot Foot" Jason Meyers was third, Randy Hannagan was fourth and Jeremy Campbell raced his way to the final transfer spot, and finished fifth. The fourth and final heat race saw Sharon Speedway track record holder Danny Lasoski take the victory. Jac Haudenschild, who won last season's World of Outlaws Sprint Series feature at Sharon Speedway, wound up second, with Donny Schatz third, Justin Henderson fourth and Greg Wilson crossed the line in fifth.
Saldana started from the pole in the 10-car six-lap dash, and went on to lead flag-to-flag to earn the pole for the 35-lap feature. Lynch maintained his strong evening by earning the second starting spot in the feature with a second place finish in the dash. Kinser and Lasoski crossed the line in fourth and fifth, respectively. Chaney, who cruised to a heat race win, was running a strong fourth in the dash when his right rear tire exploded down the backstretch on the last lap, relegating him to 10th in the dash, which garnered the 10th starting spot in the A-Main.
The final four starting positions were filled in the 12-lap B-Main. With 11 laps on the board in the B-Main, Brock Mayes flipped in turn No.4. Fortunately, Mayes was able to exit the car uninjured. After a green-white-checker finish, Terry McCarl, Danny Smith, Brooke Tatnell and Craig Dollansky all earned a spot in the feature. Dollansky barely edged out Kelly Kinser for the transfer spot.
With the preliminary racing in the books, Saldana and Lynch paced the field to the green out of turn No. 4 in the 35-lap feature. Lynch got the jump on Saldana and led the field out of the second turn. Lynch went straight to the cushion on the Hartford oval with Saldana slotting into second and Kinser third. The caution flag flew on the third circuit when Tatnell slowed on the backstretch. On the restart, Saldana dipped to the bottom of the speedway to take the lead away from "The Apollo Rocket". Solwold, who started in sixth, made a move on 20-time champion Kinser for third on lap No. 4. Solwold's R19 machine did not stop there, as he made a move on the bottom of the speedway around Lynch for second.
Meanwhile, Saldana built an eight car length lead over Solwold and Lynch. However, Solwold began reeling in Saldana, who had his No. 9 car working on the cushion. The man on the move behind the two leaders was Kinser, who jetted around Lynch for third on the 12th circuit. A little further back, Schatz was in the midst of a charge from 13th to fifth in the just 13 laps. Back at the front, Saldana, Solwold and Kinser began to create a 3-car breakaway from the field. Kinser used the moisture on the bottom of the Sharon dirt to make a tidy move around Solwold for second as the cars exited turn No. 2. One lap later the "King" replicated his low-side maneuver in the second turn. This time it was on Saldana for the lead.
Solwold followed Kinser around Saldana with a move of his own on lap No. 19. Behind the leaders, Schatz continued his charge with a nifty move to fourth. His strong run continued when darted to third around Solwold on the cushion of turn No. 2. All this took place behind Kinser. The "King" led Saldana, Schatz, Lasoski, who started fourth, and Haudenschild. A strong run for Solwold ended on lap No. 29 with flat tire.
After the yellow flag for Solwold, Kinser cruised away from the rest of the field. He built a one straightaway advantage over a battle for second between Saldana and Schatz. Kinser crossed the finish line 3.2 sec. over Saldana. Schatz slowed out of turn No.4 on the last lap with a blown engine, which relegated him to fifth in the final finishing order. Lasoski wound up third. Pittman, who charged from 15th starting position, finished in fourth. Behind Schatz in fifth, Haudenschild crossed the line in sixth. Lynch capped off a strong evening with a seventh place finish. Meyers was eighth, with Chaney ninth and Henderson 10th.
The pure stocks also lapped the Sharon oval on Friday. Jarod Larson and Will Aley made up the front row of the 15-lap feature. Aley jetted out to the early lead. With five laps on the board, Aley held a 10-car length lead. The man on the move in the stock feature was Dan Lewis. Lewis charged from 17th starting spot to second in just seven laps. Lewis then made his move in Aley as the cars worked the 11th lap. From there it was all Lewis. He went on to take the feature. Aley wound up second, Allan Hudzik was third, Bruce Redmond was fourth and Stan Woomer finished fifth. Ed Cornell and Larry Root were the heat race winners.
