BROCKVILLE-When local fan favourite Rickey Wilson heavily damaged his sprint car in the first heat, race fans quickly adoped someone who loves the fast quarter mile oval called Brockville Ontario Speedway. The result was a match made in heaven as Jessica Zemken brought a near capacity crowd to its feet taking the 25 lap ASCS Patriot Sprint Car feature on Saturday night.
Zemken's applause was even louder than the cheers each time it was announced that the Ottawa Senators had scored a goal in the Stanley Cup final. Zemken earned the victory with some nifty moves in traffic trapping leader Brian Howland behind two lapped cars, and then pulling to the high side of the race track with a quick move blasting by all three cars to take the top spot with around 7 laps to go. She then held off Howland on a few late restarts to preserve the victory. She confessed in victory lane, that Brockville was her all time favourite race track and that she loves coming north of the border to race here. The team even took the night off on Friday to be able to battle at the Beast of the East on Saturday night.
Kyle Dingwall finally found the key to winning in the 358 Modified division this season...finish the race. Dingwall finished his first race of the year and won in convincing fashion picking up the lead when John Mulder broke a suspension in the early going. Dingwall was challenged briefly by Mark Hitchcock, who made a rapid rise through the field getting past everyone but Dingwall. Brother Cole Dingwall was third followed across the line by Paul Pekkonen and father Keith Chico Dingwall, for three Dingwall in the top 5.
15 year old Chris Raabe picked up his first win of the year in the 20 lap Sportsman feature. The defending track champ stalked Randy Earl for about 7 laps finally pulling a surprise pass going into turn 1. Earl was a strong second with Kees Van Winden nipping at his heels. Sheldon Hoogwerf and Bob Albright rounded out the fast five.
Steve Barber took the 16 lap Rookie class battle. Barber had a three quarter of a lap lead at one point easily outdistancing Joe Banks and John Johnson. Jessica Power, who took a popular heat race victory earlier in the night was fourth in front of Josh Kane. Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Saturday night, June 9th with the Ken Seymour Memorial Night, with all four regular classes in action, plus an enduro event and the second appearance of the season by the Vintage cars. The green flag drops at 7pm.
