SPIEKER SCORES THRILLING USRA LATE MODEL WIN AT ADAMS COUNTY SPEEDWAY
CORNING, Iowa (June 5) -- To the delight of the fans who see him compete week after week at the Adams County Speedway, Chris Spieker of Massena, Iowa, captured the checkered flag in a thrilling 30-lap main event Tuesday as the USRA Late Models invaded the half-mile speedplant in Corning, Iowa.
From the outside of the front row, Chris Smyser of Lancaster, Mo., jumped out to a big lead at the start of the nightcap after a first-lap, three-wide battle with polesitter Todd McKee of Massena, Iowa, and fourth-starting Bryant Goldsmith of Corning. Running the high side of the track, Smyser stretched his lead out to 10 car-lengths early in the race while Goldsmith, Spieker and USRA Late Model national points leader Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, battled behind him.
Spieker, who started eighth, used the extreme low side of the racing surface to move into second and caught Smyser by the race's halfway point. From there, Spieker began to distance himself from the field and appeared en route to an easy victory. But while Spieker remained faithful to the low line, the track's middle groove was getting blacker by the lap.
With 10 laps to go and using the rubbered-up middle groove, Corning's Trent Jackson grabbed the second spot and closed quickly on Spieker. With two laps to go, Jackson nosed ahead of Spieker exiting turn 4, but his Late Model slid over the embankment at the entrance of turn 1 and Jackson disappeared in a cloud of dust as he tried to steer his machine back onto the racing surface.
Still nearly half a straight-away behind the leader, Smyser narrowed the gap to three car-lengths as they took the white flag. As Spieker slid up exiting turn 4 with the checkered flag in sight, Smyser turned back to the low side of the track but fell a car-length short at the line. The win was worth $2,000 for Spieker, who became the fourth different winner in four races during the inaugural season for the USRA Late Models.
Goldsmith hung on for third, followed by Simpson and Mount Ayr's Paul Glendenning. Sixth through 10th went to Corey Zeitner, Jackson, former NASCAR Weekly Racing Series national champion Joe Kosiski, McKee and Travis Roth.
The high-powered USRA Late Models are back in action this Tuesday, June 7, at the Dubuque Speedway in Dubuque, Iowa, for another $2,000-to-win event as they co-headline the show with the O'Reilly USMTS Modifieds. Pit gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and grandstand gates will swing open at 5:00. Hot laps start at 6:30 and the first green flag is scheduled to wave at 7:00.
The Dubuque Speedway is a 3/8-mile high-banked dirt oval located 5 miles west of Dubuque on US 20, then 2 miles northwest on Old Hwy. 20 Rd. (at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds).
