CHAD LAYTON WAKES UP THE TROOPS TO WIN CAREER FIRST URC MAIN THE HARD
WAY AT LINCOLN SPEEDWAY
Over the past two years, there has been much discussion about URC's
handicapping policy, but Saturday night at the Lincoln Speedway, there
was no obstacle (even the handicapping system) that was going to stop
Chad Layton of Harrisburg, PA from winning the 25 lap, $2,000 to win URC
Bar's Leaks Sprint Series 25 lap feature event. Layton, who never won a
URC feature, made his first attempt of 2007 in heat race qualifying.
Starting last in one of URC's four qualifying events, Layton charged to
the front of the pack to score the win. This heat race victory earned
Layton the third place starting position in the feature event that is
part of the Valley Forge INC Pennsylvania Sprint Series. Layton took
the lead on lap two then held off a determined Brian Seidel for most of
the race, to score an impressive first time URC victory.
A field of thirty-seven URC sprint cars turned out for the Lincoln
Speedway event with heat race victories going to Brian Seidel, Kramer
Williamson, Chad Layton and Chris Coyle. In the Don Ott "B" Main event,
Brook Weibley driving the Eldreth Construction #25 took the win.
Twenty-five sprint cars took the green flag in the feature event and a
traffic jam developed immediately in turn two as eleven cars tangled,
displaying the red flag. Point leader Justin Collett and defending URC
Champion Curt Michael were two cars caught-up in the mishap. On the
restart, Brian Seidel set the early pace to lead lap one with Chad
Layton taking the lead on lap two. The second red flag was displayed on
lap three when Canadian driver Alain Bergeron took a slow roll in turn
two. Bergeron did continue in the race.
Back to green flag racing and Layton continued to set the pace until the
yellow was again displayed, this time for rookie driver Andy Hannula who
spun in turn one. The green lights came back on and Layton clicked off
another lap before the yellow was thrown, as point leader Justin Collett
spun in turn four, nearly collecting Curt Michael. Collett retired to
the pits and was done for the night.
Chad Layton led the field past the flag stand for lap six with Brian
Seidel in the Valley Forge INC sprinter challenging for the top spot.
Also on a charge was Kramer Williamson, now racing in third.
The Layton and Seidel battle was worth the price of admission as the duo
continued their fight at the halfway point. Following in the top five
was Williamson, Chris Coyle and Jason Clauss. Deeper in the pack, Curt
Michael was doing a commendable job, working towards the front in an
ill-handling sprint car as a result of damage sustained in the first lap
crash.
The red flag was displayed on lap sixteen, this time for Davey Sammons
who took a wild flip in turn one. Sammons walked away uninjured
however, the sprint car was badly damaged.
Back to green flag racing and Layton was still in control as Seidel was
looking for another groove to make a pass. On lap twenty-one,
Williamson moved into second and he took a shot at chasing down the
leader. Time ran out and Chad Layton rallied home the winner of the URC
sprint feature event. Kramer Williamson finished second followed by
Brian Seidel, Jason Clauss and Chris Coyle. Making up the top ten were
Michael Carber, Trevor Lewis (advanced 14 spots), Jeff VanDusen, Mark
Bitner and Curt Michael delivered an impressive tenth place finish after
going to the rear early in the event.
