Variety Tops Great Sunday Show At ‘The Port’ On Town Mechanical Night

Weedsport, NY – June 10, 2007 – By Gary M. Spaid, Cayuga County Fair Speedway PR

A wide variety of racing action took place on Sunday, June 10 at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Topping the bill were twin DIRTcar Sportsman Modified 20-lappers. James Spano took the victory in the first 20-lapper while Shawn Donath cruised home an easy winner in the nightcap. Following a post-race protest, Spano was fined his points and winnings for the evening by DIRTcar officials after he refused technical inspection.

The highlight of the evening was “The World’s Greatest Trailer Race,”an event that lived up to it’s billing. Trailers made up of pop-up campers to full size campers and even flat beds carrying boats turned out for this rather odd race. The last vehicle still towing a trailer, no matter what condition that trailer was in, was awarded the victory. Craig Palmeri, aka Moses Shalom, took the win, after the 15-minute dash around the speedway. Finally in the end his was his lone trailer still in tow.

The UMP/DIRTcar Ferris Mowers Street Stocks were also in action, with Dave Mannise leading the way home following a number of weeks off under UMP suspension. “I could hear someone coming but I didn’t know who or how far away they were,” he related. “The track was good and starting up front really helped out tonight.”

The BattleKarz returned to action with division points leader Bill Werner taking the 25-lap win, his third of the season. The event had to be halted for nearly a half-hour as an ambulance was called for after Donnie Mack slammed the second turn wall on the opening lap an suffered a possible shoulder injury.

The Central NY Mini-Sprints were back, but the results were the same as last time, back in April. Donald Harvey from Milford , NY took the 20-lap victory. Finally Gina Cook, from Port Byron, NY, won the Soccer Moms Karmageddon, a five-lap Mini Van race.

The first of Two Sportsman features came to the starting line with Spano on the pole and he quickly rocketed into the lead with Tim Currier in hot pursuit. It only took four laps for Currier to take the lead. However, once out front the yellow flew, lap seven, when John Juhl II, Mat Williamson and Greg Hixson came together in the second turn.

On the restart, Spano retook first place then hold off a serious challenge by Joe Williams during the final laps of the race to take the win. Williams came home in second followed by Scott Schrader, Jeremy Pitcher and Currier. Following the race a protest was placed on the Spano car. That protest was going to be handled following the second 20- lapper.

In victory lane Spano related,” I didn’t think anyone was even close to me. Once I saw Joe I knew I should get going.” Spano then proceeded to draw the number 14, to invert that many cars for the second feature. He also accepted a $175 bonus challenge offered to win the second 20-lapper.

The start of the finale had Anthony Steiner and Jeff Isabell Jr. pacing the field down to the green. Isabell held off Steiner and took an early lead but all eyes were glued to Donath, who started ninth and began using the high grove around the speedway. By lap four he pulled into second and began to challenge for the lead. Donath reached that goal on lap seven as he again charged to the high side of Isabell Jr. exiting the fourth turn to take the lead.

This 20-lapper went green-to-checkers and averaged 72.747 mph. Donath built p a huge lead of over a half-lap on Isabell Jr. On lap 16, Steiner passed Isabell Jr. for second and held on to the last lap. Donath took the win followed by Steiner, Currier, Schrader and Mike Mahaney.

“We were off on our set-up in the first 20 lapper,” commented Donath, “but the team worked hard and made the changes which made a huge difference during this race.” He added, “I want to thank Jeff (Farney) and his crew on making this track phenomenal this year. He then plugged his motor maker, ”We have to use up this Ford Motor this year as it will be gone next year.” He stated this in reference to the change over in the sportsman division in 2008 to an all-Crate Motor Class.

The 20-lap Central NY Mini-Sprint main got off to a rocky start. The yellow flew on the first lap for a three-car shunt in the second turn involving were Michael Kiser, Arthur Kiser and Chuck Hebing.

Out front was Christopher Haskell leading Broderick. On lap four Ricky Donovan looped his mini in the second turn to bring out the yellow and on the ensuing restart a multi-car accident included 62 year-old Arthur Kiser Jr. who flipped end-over-end in the first turn. On a third attempt at a restart the yellow flew again when Brian Oliver looped his number 10 in the second turn.

Once underway it would be Broderick with the lead and Donald Harvey in pursuit. On lap 10 the yellow flew again when Shawn Gosselin spun exiting the second turn and was collected by James Kiser. On this restart Harvey completed his mission as he took the lead from Broderick and from this point on the race was only for second. Harvey cruised home a winner by nearly ten car-lengths over Broderick. Mike Kiser, Brian Pompino and Brian Oliver rounded out the top-five finishers. “That last restart he had to shift and I didn’t and that made the difference,” Harvey said in victory lane. “Our right rear really started working especially on the low side where there was a lot of moisture in the track.”

The UMP Street Stock feature went green-to-checkers with Mannise leading all 15 laps. Nick Rizzo made a late race run at the lead but fell short and wound up second. Phil Marsden, Nathan Peckham and Mike Welch rounded out the front-five.

CCFS CAPSULE: Steve Planck had sore ribs after contacting the second turn wall almost head on during his heat race….Over 75 cars were in the pits for the night’s activities….Most everyone stayed for the Trailer races. The roars from the crowd seemed to indicate they enjoyed the special event. This Sunday, June 17 is “Father’s Day” and the DIRTcar Modifieds return to the fast three-eighths mile oval. The WALL Radio will present racing in all four divisions at the track including DIRTcar Modifieds, Sportsman Modifieds, UMP Street Stocks and BattleKarz. Joining in on the action will be the “Green Mamba” Jet Car to do some serious damage to a street car, like melt it down and cut it in two. Pit gates unlock at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5 o’clock with racing starting at 7 p.m. sharp. The Cayuga County Fairgrounds is located just east of the village of Weedsport , off Exit 40 of the New York State Thruway.
