WHITNEY WINS OSHKOSH IRA SHOW
6/8 Oshkosh, WI Defending Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints Champion Travis Whitney picked up his first series win of 2007 by capturing the 30 lap main event on the fast red clay third-mile Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway Friday. Whitney piloted his father Walt's Don Ott powered Premier Transmissions no.9 to victory, though it was no easy task as he had to overtake other race leaders Scott Young and Mike Kertscher, and then hold off a charging Mike Reinke for the win.
Young led the initial laps before Whitney took the point on lap nine. Eighth starting Kertscher rim-rode past both Whitney and Young on lap eleven creating some great racing upfront as the trio threaded their way in heavy traffic. Young would fade some with Todd King taking over the third slot. Kertscher and Whitney would continue to swap the lead for the next six laps before a debris caution would slow the action and allow the large crowd a chance to breathe.
Whitney would lead Kertscher, King, Young, and Reinke to the restart. Kertscher got a poor start, and would pull off a lap later with steering woes ending his fine drive. Reinke charged into second and closed the gap at the end, though it was Whitney taking the checkered flag. King would put in his best effort of the season with a sold third. Donny Goeden put on a big late race charge to take fourth over Young. Steve Meyer, Scott Uttech, Scotty Neitzel, Kim Mock, and Jason Johnson completed the top ten.
John Haeni set fast time, while heat wins went to Scott Biertzer, Meyer, and Kertscher. Johnson captured the B-main, while Brian Kristan was the night's hard charger finishing eleventh from his twenty-second starting position.
