Hughes wins thrilling USMTS Modified Race at Lebanon I-44 Speedway
(Lebanon) The Modifieds of the O'Reilly Auto Parts United States
Modified Touring Series flew around the high-banked red clay of the
Lebanon I-44 Speedway Saturday night at nearly 100 MPH.
While two of the series top drivers – Al Hejna and USMTS points leader
Kelly Shryock – battled for second, Jason Hughes out of Colcord, OK,
left both cars in his dust as he captured the checkered flag in the
25-lap $2000-to-win feature.
Hughes, who led the final 8 laps, took over the lead from Steve
Holzkamper. Holzkamper suffered an engine failure, and as he
decreased his speed, Hughes tapped him from behind to send the race
leader spinning on the front stretch of the Lebanon I-44 Speedway.
"[Holzkamper] slowed down all of a sudden, and I was on the throttle
right behind him," Hughes said about the contact. "As fast as we're
going here, things happen really quick."
Hughes' last win came nearly a year ago at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway's
sister track in Monett.
"We'll take it when we can get it," he added, before thanking his crew
and the USMTS organizing body.
Shryock finished ahead of Hejna, and Dustin Boney, who started on the
inside of row 1. Corey Dripps finished 5th, after starting 13th in
the field of 24 cars. In total, 40 Modifieds raced Saturday night at
the Lebanon I-44 Speedway.
Lebanon I-44 Speedway's Modified regulars faced stiff competition from
the USMTS drivers Saturday night. Last week's feature winner David
Hendrix finished 14th Saturday night, while 2006 Lebanon I-44 Speedway
Modified Champion Justin Neuman missed the A-Main after suffering
mechanical failure while running in the Top 5 in the second B-Main.
The best finish by a Lebanon I-44 Speedway regular came from Tony
Jackson Jr., who finished 10th. Jackson had finished 14th against the
USMTS drivers the previous night at the Bolivar Speedway.
Several other classes were in action Saturday night at the Lebanon
I-44 Speedway.
Last week's Factory Stock feature winner Jordan Holloway's left front
tire burst into flames on the last lap of the 15-lap feature while
trying to run down leader Kris Jackson. Holloway came up short in his
pursuit of three Factory Stock feature wins in a row at the Lebanon
I-44 Speedway.
When asked how he was able to stay ahead of Holloway, Jackson gave the
credit to his Outlaw Racing engine.
"I think the motor speaks for itself," he said following his victory
The B-Mods refused to take a back seat to the USMTS Modifieds in their
exciting feature that saw an elated Jason Otto capture his first
victory on the year. Before taking the checkered, Otto had to hold
off last week's feature winner Josh Woody, who raced Otto side-by-side
in a fierce battle.
"Everything worked out good tonight," Otto said of his victory.
He thanked Tony Jackson Jr. for helping him with his set up, and
wished his dad a happy Father's Day. Otto had run up front all season
long, but the checkered flag had eluded him until Saturday night.
In the Bomber feature, Quinton Day kept his car ahead of Joe Francis
to capture the Bomber feature win.
"I've had some problems with the car. I'm just glad to be in a race
tonight," Day said, before thanking his wife for her support.
Meanwhile, Rich Reynolds kept Josh Lewis at bay en route to another
Rookie feature victory at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway. Reynolds praised
Lewis for racing him clean.
The Lebanon I-44 Speedway holds a special night of racing Tuesday, as
the UMP Summer National Outlaw Late Models will compete at speeds in
excess of 105 MPH on the 3/8-mile high-banked red clay. The UMP
Summer Nationals feature the top Late Model drivers in the country
competing in a grueling schedule of 28 races in 30 days. The Lebanon
I-44 Speedway hosts one of the early dates on the tour, which began in
Kankakee, IL, on Friday night. Factory Stock and Bombers will also
race Tuesday night at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway. Gates open at 5PM,
and racing starts promptly at 730PM.
