Jeff Vandusen wins the ESS feature at Cornwall Motor Speedway
By Martin Bélanger
CORNWALL, On – Sunday June 17, 2007 – The Empire Super Sprints were in town on this beautiful Sunday evening for bumper sticker night. A capacity crowd was also on hand to see the spectacular winged warriors. A total of 21 sprint cars showed up for their first of two visits at the Cornwall Motor Speedway.
Jeff Cook took the lead over 19 other competitors on the initial green of the 25 laps feature. He led for the first 6 laps until he got too high in turn 3 and 4 and Jeff Vandusen and Lance Yonge were able to pass him. A yellow on lap 10 for point leader Steve Poirier and second place Jeff Cook slows the field. On the restart, VanDusen is able to keep the lead over Yonge. VanDusen was able to keep is lead with on three other cautions to win a cool $2,000 payout. It was his second feature in a row as he won the night before at Drummondville. Lance Yonge finished second, followed by Tommy Wickham in third, with Alain Bergeron and Mike Stelter rounding up the top 5. Lance Yonge, Alain Bergeron and Jeff Vandusen won the qualification heats and Bergeron was the winner in the 4 laps dash for cash.
Perry Francis grabbed the lead in the 30 laps feature for the modified. He led for the first 13 laps until he got tangled with second place runner Lee Ladouceur and was costly for Francis as he had to go back and Ladouceur was not first. This brought the first yellow of the feature. Danny Johnson who started in the fifteenth spot was now fifth. On the restart, Ladouceur was able to keep the lead and McDonald slipped by Chico Dingwall for second place. Another yellow on lap 19 for Pierre Dagenais slows down the field again. Ladouceur keeps the lead on the restart but with Johnson now second fans knew that he would give a good show to Ladouceur. On lap 20, Johnson used the outside lane to pass by Ladouceur to go and grab his second feature in a row at Cornwall. Brian McDonald finished second, followed by Chico Dingwall in third, Carey Terrance in fourth and Lance Willix, rounding up the top 5. Laurent Ladouceur, Lee Ladouceur and Danny Johnson won the heat race.
A very entertaining feature was on hand in the pro-stock class as 19 cars took the green flag with Bissonnette in the lead for the first twelve laps. But Louie Jackson who started in the eleventh position took the top spot from Bissonnette with an outside move on lap 13 with Ladouceur making the same move on the ‘bulldog’ but from the inside spot. A last lap caution for Daniel Leduc, would give a one lap shootout for the coveted prize between Jackson and Ladouceur. It was finally ‘action’ Jackson who used the outside groove to win his first one of the season. Joey Ladouceur, Dave Bissonnette and Stéphane Lebrun won the heats.
In the semi-pro feature, 14 cars took the green flag as Steve Herrigan grabbed the lead but last week`s winner Stuart Mullin had other ideas when he did an outside move on Herrigan and never looked back to win his second feature in a row at Cornwall, Mullin was followed by Marc Lalonde and Mathieu Aubin completed the top 3. Mullin had a perfect night, as he won his heat race, Aubin won the second one.
As usual, it was another exciting night of racing at Cornwall Motor Speedway with fireworks greeted the feature winners. Over 80 cars showed up for tonight`s race program. Do not miss next week racing program, as it will be fan appreciation night presented by Minute Auto Wash. It will only be 4$ admission to see the best racing action in Eastern Ontario. You cannot miss what probably is the best deal of the season!
