During the qualifying heats of the School Bus Races, presented by Free Flo Petroleum, the #77 of Bernie Rhebergen took turn two a little wide and landed on his side on June 16th at Brighton Speedway Park. This kicked off an exciting night of racing for the traditional passenger carrying vehicles. Fifteen buses in total hit the 1/3 mile clay oval for sometimes three wide competition. Taking the qualifying wins were legend of racing Earl Gregory (#22), of Frankford, and well-known driver Jeff Sallans, from Trenton, in the #72. Following Gregory’s win he stated, “If I can win the feature I can retire happy, because then I have won ‘em all!!” Unable to retire after Rick Sopaz (#24) from Brighton took the checker, Gregory shrugged his shoulders and said, “I guess I will be back.” He and the rest of the school bus fleet will return on Saturday, September 8th.
The excitement from the buses was matched with the plenty of heat on the track as the Lange and Fetter complete race program provided the fans with non stop racing action. Feeling the heat as he crossed the finish line, literally in flames, was the #32 Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified of Doug O’blenis from Shannonville. After starting the season with repeated mechanical issues, his first double win of the season was hard earned and he will be back to the garage for more work this week.
Prince Edward County was well represented as another intense win went to Corey Earl (#11), of Ameliasburgh, in the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock Feature. His first feature win in this division was well earned as he kept his competitors behind him despite repeated attempts by veterans and beginners alike. Also successful in taking feature checkers were Chris Rice #06, of Picton in the Mister Signz Pure Stock and Stacey Ferguson (#1) also of Picton in the Bill’s Johns Comp 4. Ferguson’s win nets her a great start in the added incentive Hotch’s Auto Parts Triple Crown Series.
The next race events are the Hutchinson Fuels Ontario Legends Series first time ever points event on dirt in Canada, featuring local racing celebrity Sammy Hazelwood, and the Mayor’s Hospice Cup on Saturday June 23rd. The Green Flag flies at 7:00pm. Sunday June 24th will feature the Hotch’s Auto Parts 66 Mile Scrambler, 200 lap Endurance Race. Green Flag flies at 2:00pm.
