First Time Winners Highlight Father’s Day At Cayuga Co. Fair Speedway

Weedsport, NY – June 17, 2007 – By Gary M. Spaid, Cayuga County Fair Speedway PR

The nightcap on Sunday was the Green Mamba jet car melting down double-stacked mini-vans to the pleasure of the crowd. But earlier it was a number of new winners who enjoyed their Father’s Day on June 17. Only the DIRTcar Modified feature winner, Jimmy Phelps, had been to the Cayuga County Fair Speedway victory lane earlier this season.

In the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified division, young Mike Mahaney earned his first-ever open-wheel Sportsman victory. “My dad is the reason I’m here racing,” Mahaney said in victory lane. “I have to thank him for helping to make this all possible. This win will be a great Father’s Day present for him.”

The UMP Ferris Mowers Street Stock division also produced a first time winner in Jim Wallace. “This is my very first feature win ever,” related Wallace to announcer Shane Andrews. “I have to extend a thank you to my wife and kids who put up with late nights of working on this car.”

Tom Cook had not won a BattleKarz race since last August. But he took the 25-lap victory and then dedicated the victory to his friend Donnie Mack, who was involved in an accident last week during the BattleKarz feature run.

Mike Ward took off like a shot in the 35-lap DIRTcar Modified main, drawing away from Ryan Bartlett, Russ Hefti and Vince Vitale. On lap three, Justin Haers drifted high in the first turn and made heavy contact with the cement wall. His car bounced back onto the speedway and he continued after losing 10 positions.

The first of four yellow flag periods came on lap six when Hefti made contact with the inside cement wall and spun out in the first turn. During this yellow Haers took the opportunity to pit to change a flat tire.

Bartlett was able to take the lead from Ward on the restart. The run was short lived as the yellow flew three laps later when Shannon Whaley broke a bar and spun around in the third turn. On the ensuing restart a multi-car pileup in the fourth turn collected Hefti, Billy Dunn and Haers.

It was time for Jimmy Phelps to take the lead from Bartlett on the next restart Phelps pulled away from the field by nearly two-and-a-half seconds. In the meantime, Bartlett was having his troubles holding back Steve Paine. Lap 19, the yellow flew again when Rob Bellinger slowed on the front chute and failed to make the turn into the first turn pit area.

During the final half of the feature Phelps held off Paine as a battle was taking place for third between Derrick Podsiadlo and Vince Vitale. With just five laps remaining Podsiadlo took the show spot from Vitale.

At the finish it was Phelps followed by Paine, Podsiadlo, Vitale and Brian Weaver. “This car has been awesome all year. We worked some with it tonight and the track came to us. Running the (Advance Auto Parts) tour has helped us with set-ups. This car ended up working wonderful,” commented Phelps. “I knew Steve was coming and I was hoping we could hold him off.”

The 25-lap Sportsman main began with 19 cars answering the call and Steve Planck taking the lead at the drop of the initial green flag. Mike Mahaney seemed hooked up, taking second from Alan Fink and then chasing down Planck before taking the lead for good on lap six. The yellow flew one lap later when Bill Coleman slowed on the front stretch.

On the restart John Juhl II spun off the track in the first turn to set up a second opportunity for Planck to regain the front spot. This time three cars came together in the fourth turn; Scott Schrader, Daryl Barrett and Todd Town.

Mahaney now found multi-time feature winner Shawn Donath on his rear bumper and would have to hold off numerous challenges to remain the leader. He would have to prove his worth as the yellow flew on the white flag lap when John Juhl II tapped the inside fourth turn cement wall and spun. Dan Sellen then slid into the Juhl car.

A one lap dash to the checkers ended with Mahaney tainge the win followed by Donath, Joe Williams, Tim Currier and Kevin Ridley among the top-five finishers.

The Street Stock feature began with pole-sitter Jim Wallace holding off early challenges by Steve Woodworth and Dave Mannise. Wallace picked up his first ever Street Stock career win followed by Mannise, Woodworth, Nathan Peckham and points leader Nick Rizzo. “Everyone is fast and anyone out there can win on any night,” Wallace said. “I’m just thankful we had a good clean race. Look at the car steaming away, it was running hot. It looks like we made it by the skin of our teeth.”

CAYUGA SHORTS: The Green Mamba jet car kept the crowd around until the end. The meltdown finale was amazing….Both Kevin Ridley and Dave Rauscher signed over their earnings for the night to the Donnie Mack Fund. A number of other drivers put cash into the fund at pay off….A special B-B-Q Grill race was run with one “Fan-Father” running a record time of 13.51 seconds. Flagger Dave Farney bettered that time down to 11.03 seconds. But it must be his bald headed aerodynamics that allowed announcer Shane Andrews to better Farney’s time turning in a 9.89 second run….Shannon Whaley made his first appearance of the year in the DIRTcar Modified division. Whaley has been a regular at both Canandaigua and Cayuga County in the past.
