BREWERTON, NY – Willy Decker of Vernon used a last lap restart and pass to steal the DIRTcar Modified feature victory away from Jeff Isabell last Friday at Brewerton Speedway on A&P Auto Parts Night. With his win, Decker becomes only the first repeat winner in seven races, a record stat at the speedway in the Modified division proving parity is at its highest level in many years. Other winners were Dale Caswell in the IMCA Modifieds, Tim Devendorf in the ESDCA Mod Lites, Chuck Powelczyk in the Four Cylinder Super Stocks, and Don Harvey Jr. in the Central New York Mini-Sprints.
Willy Decker came from the fourteenth starting position and led only the final lap in the $1,500 to win, 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature event. A last lap caution caused by the spinning Robbie Vormwald bunched up the field, allowing for the pass by Decker. When the green flew, Decker sped to the highside, found that magic moisture, and took the checkered flag .513 seconds ahead of a disappointed Jeff Isabell at the line.
Rick Rogala led the opening circuit, with Isabell, who started second, leading the rest of the laps, except for the final and most important one. Third was Alan Johnson who charged from fifteenth, fourth was Sean Beardsley, and fifth was Kevin Bates. Rookie Johnny Hill scored his second straight sixth place finish, followed by Dan Vauter, Tim Sears, Roy Bresnahan, and Billy Dunn.
Dale Caswell of West Monroe has been dominant in the IMCA Modified ranks, and on Friday night, he won his fifth consecutive 20-lap feature. Caswell came from tenth on the grid and took the lead from Kevan Cook on lap 12 enroute to the victory. Rich Keller led the initial seven circuits until Cook became the leader on lap 8. Cook was forced to settle for second again, with Rich Keller, Rob Keller Jr., and Rich Riggs completing the top five finishers.
Tim Devendorf of Brewerton claimed the $150 bounty on Dan Williams by winning his first ESDCA Mod Lite feature of the 2007 season and stopping the six race win streak of Williams. Devendorf started fifth on the field and took the lead on lap 5 from Jeff Herbert and never looked back. Doug Williams, Rocco Leone, Dan Williams, and Jeff Barker rounded out the top five in the 20-lap event.
Chuck Powelczyk of West Monroe won his second 15-lap Four Cylinder Super Stock main of the 2007 season. Powelczyk started seventh and took the lead from Aron Backus on lap 3 in the affair. Second was a close Matt Wetterer, third was Claude Hutchings Jr., fourth was Chris Kranz, and fifth was Lorraine Powelczyk.
Don Harvey Jr. was the 20-lap victor in the A-Verdi Storage Containers Central New York Mini-Sprint feature. Art Kiser, Mike Kiser, Bubba Broderick, and Justin Phillips completed the top five.
Coming up this Tuesday June 26 at Brewerton Speedway is the first ever Victoria 200 Rules Modified Mini-Series show at the track. The Modifieds will compete in a 35-lap, $2,000 to win special with sail panels and any 92” by 13” dirt modified type tire and Victoria 200 Rules. Also in action will be the ESDCA Mod Lites and UMP Street Stocks. Gates will open at 5:30pm, with racing at 7:30pm. PIT NOTES…Current 4-Cylinder Super Stock point leader Claude Hutchings Jr. had his 4-Cylinder break after hot laps, so close competitor Chuck Powelczyk loaned his third car in a sportsman-like gesture. Tony Buffa Jr.’s record 8 ESDCA Mod Lite feature wins in a row set in 2001 is safe, at least for now. Two time winner in the Modified ranks, Willy Decker, is just four points shy of leader Alan Johnson in the tightly contested standings. An SU Graduate student has been at the speedway the last several weeks, taping for a documentary on Auto Racing in Central New York.
