Tim Jones cashes in on Scott Wood’s misfortune to win Round #2 of the Lucas Oil Shoot-Out 358 Modified Series.
Batavia, NY—June. 23, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold,
The 358 Modified Lucas Oil Shoot-Out came to town as a twenty car combination of 358’s and a couple of local area sportsmans were ready to do battle. One disappointing factor was that 13 of the 28 drivers on the roster from the last Lucas Oil Shoo-Out race were absent. 5 of the 13 absentees were placed in the top ten in points from the previous show. Local sportsman campaigner Rob Pratt was back in action after losing a power plant last week. Pratt was also coming off a strong run the night before at Ohsweken Speedway where he ran 2nd in the Lucas Oil Shoot-Out Sportsman Series at their facility. Another notable was Greg Mrzywka in the Guy Steffen mount. Steffen has been sitting out the last few weeks after an operation. Mrzywka was no stranger to the Steffen ride as the car was the car Mrzwyka piloted last season.
Scott Wood led the field to green for the Lucas Oil Shoot-Out 358 race. Wood powered his way to commanding lead with Merrittville regular Tim Jones chasing him down after clearing Freddie Carleton. Wood would hit lap traffic by lap 10 and Jones would start to close in on the lead. Caution would fly on lap 13 when 358 modified rookie Chris Steele looped in turn 2. Jeff McGinnis and Brian Sage would battle for the 5th spot with McGinnis coming out on the winning end of the battle. Wood again showed he wanted the win by opening up a 15 car length lead over the 2nd place runner Jones. Sage would get back by McGinnis for the 5th spot. Caution would come out on lap 20 for the spinning James Michael Friesen. Wood retained the lead on the restart with Jones and Lucas Oil race one winner Scott Kerwin in tow. McGinnis would get by Carleton for 4th place and begin to close in on Kerwin. Carleton was really beginning to fade as Adam Ferri got by him on lap 28. Wood domination would come to an end with a flat left rear tire on lap 32 and Jones would make the pass for the lead coming off turn 4 before the caution would fly for the spinning Todd Gordon. This would set the field for a 2 lap dash. Ferri bolted by McGinnis on the restart but McGinnis would get his position back and the yellow would fly again as Rick Richner spun in turn 3. The field would bunch up again in single file formation for a 1 lap dash for the checkers. McGinnis pulled a power move to take the 2nd spot away from Kerwin exiting turn 4, but Tim Jones would go on to win the 35 lap feature.
