WAITS RACKS UP ANOTHER WIN

By Bill Nelson

June 23, 2007

Spring Valley Mn

Mother Nature gave the track crew fits this week by dumping almost 4” of rain in a short amount of time on Thursday afternoon followed up by a day of light drizzle on Friday. Saturday morning after a review of a game plan for the day, the track crew tackled the project of trying to get Deer Creek Speedway in race condition for another great Saturday night of racing. In times like this it is great to have a crew of good people to help out and we can’t forget to thank them. Fitzpatrick Construction for the Cat Grader and Joe Fitzpatrick for all the hours on the blade. Hyland Motors for the tractors to use during track prep time, Elcor Construction for the use of additional equipment during the packing operations. Operators who help out with their time, Richard Chinnow and also Kim Crawford of KC lawn Care who put hours in on the equipment. Without them Saturday night definitely would not have happened this week.

Once the racing action got underway the fans were treated to very good track conditions especially considering the condition of the track a few hours earlier, however their seemed to be a rash of yellow fever on the night that slowed the action down. Tim’s Repair & Towing WISSOTA Street Stocks took to the speedway for their feature race first. Ryan Goergen took the early lead with Dan Holland in second. With two down Chuck Nerland, Kevin Hager and AJ Zvorak went three wide at the line for third with Zvorak eventually taking that spot. Scot Nelson who started the year strong was still in good form working into the top five with five completed. Zvorak started working the top side of the speedway pulling alongside of Holland for second. Ten to go and Holland pulled beside Goergen for the lead and took the spot, while Zvorak and Nerland now challenged Goergen for second. A caution bunched the field back up with Goergen and Zvorak still trying to gain control of the second spot. Two laps later Zvorak was soundly in second with Nerland and Nelson moving into the third and fourth positions. Nelson and Nerland battled for the third spot on the next lap while Zvorak worked on the outside of Holland. The last five laps Zvorak and Holland raced virtually side by side with Zvorak never getting any closer than the passengers door of Holland. Coming into four on the last lap Nelson moved under Holland to try and take over the lead as Holland tried to keep Zvorak at bay. Holland and Zvorak both touched each other exiting four but Zvorak was able to keep his car a little straighter and to the checkers first in a great tight race that both drivers wanted for their first career win at the speedway. Holland held on for second with Nelson third.

The WISSOTA Dirt Doctor Trucking Midwest Modified hit the track next with a big gaggle of cars three wide for the first three corners four rows deep. It didn’t work so well for the fourth corner as Drew Williams lost his mount in front of the field ending his night along with others. Jerry Young took advantage of the restart by taking the lead followed by Josh Angst in second. Another caution with sixteen to go saw Kenny Wytaske challenge Josh Angst along with Brandon Davis as they went three wide for second behind Young. Davis took the spot early with Wytaske in third. Angst raced with Bryan Hernandez for the fourth spot. Another caution with twelve to go saw the cars only make one corner as Tim Siskow pounded the outside wall of turn two hard. With twelve laps left Wytaske powered by Young on the outside to take over the lead with Davis and Young now racing for second. Hernandez worked into fourth with Jeff Brauer in fifth. The pace was fast and furious now with the lead pack as Hernandez worked into third around davis and on the next lap was alongside of Young for second, while Davis, Brauer and a hard charging Jimmie Arnold were three wide for fourth. Arnold took control of the spot. At the finish it was Wytaske with his first win at the speedway this year followed by Young, Hernandez, Arnold and Davis

The US Army WISSOTA Super Stocks have been a tough field this year with eight different winners on the season during eight nights of racing. Kevin Hager looked extremely fast early tonight as he led from the drop of the green. Jason Gabrielson was quickly in second with last week’s winner Brian Fetting in third. With two down the top six dropped into single file formation around the speedway as they settled down for green flag laps. With thirteen to go Ryan Siegle was working on Gabrielson who dropped back to third after Fetting moved into second. Fetting was closing in on Hager when a caution flew with ten to go. On the restart Hager got spun in front of the field. Another restart saw Siegle move under Gabrielson to take over second and then as he attempted to move under Hager lost control of his squad and spun in four. On the ensuing restart Gabrielson powered by on the top side to take over the lead with Hager in second. Kurt Kromschroeder finished in the third spot after starting twelfth on the field as Gabrielson collected his second win of the season at the speedway.

Tony Bloom continued rolling along this week with good runs taking the lead early on in the Valley Featherlite WISSOTA late Model division. Kerry Hanson sat in second while Nick Herrick continued his charge in the division up to the third spot early on. Steve Yaggy and Lance Matthees were side by side for fourth as Batty Underdahl shot around them on the high side from his tenth starting spot. Herrick and Underdahl were both above the typically groove most of the late models were using early and it was paying off as they charged forward. Herrick used the line to power into the lead while Underdahl followed into second. Nineteen to go and Hanson had his hands full with Matthees trying to get by while Matthees had Neil Eckhart trying to get even lower on him. Fourteen to go and lapped traffic was going to be a factor but while racing for position Matthees and Eckhart touched in three and four spinning like a pair of synchronized swimmers. On the restart Jay Ihrke and Keith Foss touched in the back straight making others check up behind them bringing out yet another caution. The next restart finally saw some additional laps with Matthees now working on Bloom for third. Underdahl sat on Herricks bumper waiting for that little mistake while Hanson now tried to get around Bloom. Eight to go and Matthees caught the leaders and under Underdahl for second and made a pass for the lead just as the final caution flew. On the restart Underdahl took second back and started pressuring the leader only to have tire problems dropping him back through the field. Herrick then cruised home with the win followed by Matthees and Hanson with Jay Ihrke and Erick Pember charging up late to finish in the top five.

After receiving a used Kraft Kar from Tommy Myer last week Ben Rippentrop sat on the pole for the EZ Fabricating USRA Modified feature and took an early lead followed by Brian Shaw and Brad Waits. With two laps completed Waits moved into second while Steve Wetzstein and Mike Sorensen rounded out the top five spot. A restart with twenty two to go saw Waits fly by Rippentrop up around the wall of the speedway. A nasty wreck happened next as Dave Wytaske Jr. took a series of nasty barrel rolls down the back straight. Looks like the car will need some work before it is able to hit the track again but Wytaske Jr. was uninjured. On the restart Waits took the lead with Rippentrop in second, Sorensen in third and Wetzstein moved past Shaw on the outside for fourth. Sorensen dropped low on the track to work on Rippentrop only to have Wetzstein fly by him up high. Sorensen moved up top after being passed and worked past Rippentrop only to have Jason Cummins start pressuring him on the low side. A restart with eleven to go saw Waits continue to lead with Wetzstein trying to get around him on the high side. Jason Cummins still tried to work past Sorensen for third as Tim Donlinger rounded out the top five after getting under Rippentrop late in the race. Waits held on for his second win of the season.
