Joe Gabrielson notches first career win in e-mod feature

HARTFORD, Ohio; June 23, 2007 - Ed Lynch, Jr. (Sprints), Russell King (Modified), Joe Gabrielson (E-Mod), Dan Lewis (Stock) and Guy Griffin (Limited Sprint) were victorious in the FANtastic Five features in Sharon Speedway's eighth night of action in 2007 on Saturday.

Russell King took top honors in the Gibson-Governor Insurance Modified 25-lap feature. Brian Swartzlander and Daniel Taylor occupied the top two slots at the start of the race. Swartzlander took the lead right off the bat. Rob Kristyak slotted into second spot, with Russell King third. Kristyak closed in on Sawartzlander's bumper as the cars worked the third circuit. However, Swartzlander pulled out to a 10 car length lead over Kristyak before the cars put six laps on the board. The battle was for second, with Russell King coming out on top, sending Kristyak to third. At the midway point of the race, Swartzlander led Russell King, Kristyak, Jim Weller, Jr. and Rex King. Rex King was the man on the move, as he found his way past Weller for fourth and closed in on Kristyak for third. Just as Rex King made his move, Kristyak slowed with a flat tire. Meanwhile, back at the front, Swartzlander maintained a two second lead over Russell King. The yellow flag flew on the 19th lap, allowing Russell King to close on the bumper of Swartzlander. Prior to the caution, Russell King was lapping the speedway slightly quicker than the leader. Therefore, the yellow was all he needed to make his move. Russell King used the bottom of Turn Four to snag the lead away from Swartzlander on lap 21. However, Swartzlander came right back on the cushion. The two drivers lapped the Hartford oval side-by-side for nearly three laps. Swartzlander drove the wheels off his No. 83 big block, but Russell King kept his cool on his way to his first Sharon win of 2007. Swartzlander wound up second. Rex King drove a steady race, and finished third, with Weller fourth and Del Rougeux fifth. Rougeux and Swartzlander won the heat races.

Joe Gabrielson earned his first career victory in the Coy Brothers Trucking E-Mod feature. Paul Phillips and Gabrielson led the field to the green, with Gabrielson jetting out to the early lead. Gabrielson had the field covered in the early stint of the race despite two cautions. With six laps on the board, Gabrielson led Scott Stiffler and Jeff Sharp. Stiffler stuck his nose under Gabrielson in a scuffle for the lead just as the yellow flag flew for Jeff Hassay, who stopped in Turn One. One lap later, Stiffler completed the maneuver to take the lead on the outside of Turn Two, but the caution flag halted the field before Stiffler completed the lap, which sent Gabrielson back to the lead. On the lap eight restart, Jeff Sharp made a nice move on the low side of Stiffler entering Turn One to take second. Sharp reeled in Gabrielson to battle for the lead on the ninth lap when the caution flag flew once again. Gabrielson had a strong restart, which allowed for a slight bit of breathing space. Nonetheless, Sharp closed back in on Gabrielson's bumper. Gabrielson drove like a savvy veteran as he chased his first career feature win. The youngster was cruising to the win, but the yellow flag on the white flag lap. With a green-white-checker finish in place, Gabrielson drove one calm, cool circuit on his way to his very first career victory, just two years removed from go-kart racing. Gabrielson became the sixth different e-mod winner in eight races at Sharon Speedway this season. Sharp crossed the line second. Stiffler looked to be on his way to third, but spun in Turn Four. That allowed Bob Diver to finish third, Howard Fraley fourth and Bob McCann fifth. In the heat race, McCann and Sharp were the winners.

The 25-lap Warren Harley-Davidson Sprint feature crown went to Ed Lynch, Jr., who scored his 200th career sprint car victory after taking the checkered flag. David Doherty, from Sydney, Australia, and Russ Sansosti paced the field to the green flag out of Turn Four. Third place starter Troy Little, who is also from Sydney, snagged the early lead, with Jarod Larson looking high. Little held off Larson's early charge to maintain the top spot. Lynch was on the move in the early going. He rolled off sixth and found his way around Larson for second on the bottom of Turn Two after four laps. Right behind Lynch was current point leader Bob Felmlee, who started ninth. Felmlee was in fourth before five laps were on the board. Back at the front, Little and Lynch caught heavy lapped traffic as the field worked the seventh lap. With Lynch on his bumper, Little maintained his edge until the ninth lap. Lynch made his move on the low side of Turn Three, but Little maintained the point. Two laps later, Lynch snagged the top spot as the top two caught a slower car in Turn Two. The leaders split the lapped car, with Lynch taking the lead on the bottom. This time Lynch took the lead outright, with Little slotting into second, and Felmlee third. At the halfway point, Lynch maintained the lead, but encountered a series of backmarkers, which allowed Little to remain in hot pursuit. As the "Apollo Rocket" picked his way through the lapped cars, Little spun in Turn One on the 15th lap, bringing out the first caution flag of the race. At the yellow, the top five cars were Lynch, Felmlee, Larson, Dan Shetler and Sansosti. The only mover after the restart was Shetler, as he found his way past Larson for third out of Turn Four. All this took place behind Lynch as he rocketed away from the field. Despite a near-spin on the backstretch with three laps to go, Lynch cruised to his 46th career feature victory at Sharon Speedway. Felmlee crossed the line second, with Shetler third, Kevin Schaeffer fourth and Larson fifth. Larson and Doherty took the heat races.

In the Tom's Sewer and Drain Service Pure Stock 15-lap feature, Dan Lewis took the victory, marking his fourth trip to victory lane this year. As the field took the green flag, Will Aley and Eric Williams made up the front row. Aley jumped out to the early lead, but the battle was on behind him. The preliminary circuits featured a frenetic four-car scuffle for the lead between Aley, Stan Woomer, Lewis and Mike Aley. The four cars raced two and three-wide using all of the real estate on the Hartford oval. After a yellow flag period, the battle subsided to just two cars. The scuffle was between Aley and Lewis. On lap No. 7, Lewis took advantage of moisture on the bottom of Turn Two to take the lead away from Aley. Lewis held the edge with 10 laps on the board, but Aley remained right on his bumper. Despite a series of cautions, Lewis controlled the pace at the front in what turned into a train of cars on the bottom of the oval looking for moisture. Lewis weathered the challengers to take his fourth win of the season. Will Aley was second, with brother Michael third. Andy Thompson finished fourth, but crossed the scales too light. That moved Ed Cornell to fourth and Steve D'Apolito fifth. Woomer, D'Apolito and Aley were the heat race winners.

Guy Griffin was the winner in the Limited Sprint division's 15-lap feature. Griffin and Nick Miller were the front row starters for the feature, with Griffin taking the early edge. Eric Williams slotted into second position behind Griffin. Griffin built a 10 car length edge over the second place machine before the cars completed their fourth lap. At the halfway point of the feature, Griffin led Williams, Jason Scoville and Brandon Spithaler. Griffin appeared to be coasting to the victory, but Scoville, who won his first race on June 16, flipped after clipping the lapped machine of Joel Trent. Scoville was uninjured in the incident. Despite the brief stoppage, Griffin cruised to his fifth victory of the season. Williams wound up second. Spithaler was third, with Nick Miller fourth and James Morris fifth. Griffin won the only heat race.

FANtastic Five racing will continue Saturday, June 30. Tickets will be available at a price of $11 for adults (16 and older), $5 for kids (12-15) and free for children 11 and younger.
