Weedsport, NY – June 24, 2007 – By Gary M. Spaid & Tom Skibinski , Cayuga County Fair Speedway PR
The nationally acclaimed World of Outlaws Late Model Series made its second annual stop at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Sunday and it was Bear Lake , Pa. standout Chub Frank making it two straight in the 50-lap A-Main at DIRTcar Racing NorthEast’s home track.
Sharing the night with the World of Outlaw LMS for the second year in a row were a full field of BRP CanAm Series entries, with Jeff Chesebro capturing the 30-lap main event. In Cayuga County ’s only regular division on the card, Nick Rizzo from Wolcott , NY , picked up his second Ferris Mowers UMP/DIRTcar Street Stock feature win of the season before an SRO crowd on June 24.
Pole-sitter Steve Francis paced the 24-car WoO Late Model field for the opening 28 laps before seventh-place starter Rick Eckert blasted by with half the race in the record book. Shadowing the front runners throughout the event, Frank finally ducked his no. 1* Lester Buildings/Rocket under fellow Pennsylvanian Eckert on lap 42 and opened up an eight car-length advantage on his way to the lucrative $10,000 top prize.
“I brought in my lucky charm, my granddaughter, she was here last year when I won,” said Frank, after posting his fourth win of the season. “The track was fast and racy tonight, but still a little different than last year. I could really haul it into turn three high yet could also drive low to get some better traction. Rick was running inside so I had no choice but to go to the top and I had to take a couple chances in traffic to get it done.”
Eckert secured runner-up laurels at the line ahead of Francis, DIRTcar Big-Block Modified mainstay Vic Coffey, Shane Clanton, points leader entering the event Clint Smith and area Modified favorite Tim Fuller. Heat wins went to Frank, Francis and Coffey, with Brian Shirley copping the B-Main.
Coffey collected a $500 in ‘Bonus Bucks’ for being the first non-winner not among the top-12 in points while Fuller pocketed an additional $250 as the highest finishing rookie in the field. Fast timer Robbie Blair dropped after before the halfway point and was the ‘hard Luck’ award winner in 21st-place. Todd Hansen was able to hold off front row partner Chesebro for the initial five circuits, yet despite three caution periods for minor mishaps, the final outcome was never in doubt for the Smethport, Pa. traveler.
“I went real hard on the right rear (tire compound) and that was a big mistake tonight but fortunately I was able to make the top work,” said Chesebro, after posting his fourth career BRP CanAm victory. He became the fifth different winner in six events this season with his first tour triumph of the year. “We’ve been good this year but something has always happened, already crashing out a few times. It feels good to finally put one together and come out on top.”
The victory for Chesebro was worth $1,000, with Hansen settling for second followed by defending BRP CanAm Series Champion and current points leader Randy Hall, who charged from 13th, former DIRTcar Pro Stock pilot Mike Williams and Keystone State driver Matt Cobb. “Once I get into a rhythm the cars seems to get better and better,” stated Rizzo in victory lane following his second DIRTcar Street Stock win of the year at Cayuga County . “I have to thank the track crew for preparing another great track. This is probably the best I’ve raced on all year.”
Last week’s race winner Jim Wallace took the lead at the drop of the initial green flag followed by Van Grant and David Pope. A spin by Nathan Peckham ---winner the night before at Canandaigua Speedway--- in the fourth turn brought out the yellow. On the restart leader Wallace spun in the first turn, causing the restart to be run again, this time with Wallace piucking up the rear.
Back underway, Steve Woodworth was able to successfully sling-shot around the pack to lead the second lap. Woodworth found himself immediately challenged by Rizzo, who was then able to take the lead on the four lap and start to pull out a slight advantage.
The yellow flew on lap 10 when Peckham, Wallace and Grant all spun in tandem in the middle of the first turn. The yellow lights flashed once more on the ensuing restart when Steve Crouse coasted to a stop in the fourth turn. A pair of green flag laps went into the record books before two more yellows flew on laps 14 and 15. Both of these slowdowns were for minor spins and flat tires.
Up front it was still Rizzo followed by Dave Marcuccilli, Adam DePuy and Woodworth. The final yellow unfurled on lap 17 when Andy Fisk and Peckham spun in the first turn. During this yellow both Marcuccilli and DePuy pitted out of the race which moved Woodworth into second. On the last restart Dave Mannise tried to take the second spot away, although it would take him until the final lap to succeed in making that pass stick.
At the finish it was Rizzo followed by Mannise, Woodworth, Colton Chappius and Pope. Good fortune accompanied Pope earlier in the race when a flat tire was about to sideline him, however the yellow flew and saved the lap allowing him time to change his tire and return to the race on the lead lap.
