Chesebro Center Stage For BRP CanAm Late Models At CCFS

Posted by Tom Ames  |  06/25/07

Weedsport, NY…Jeff Chesebro finally got his first 2007 BRP CanAm Late Model win. He has been spectacular in his efforts in the five prior events, but waited to share center stage with World of Outlaws Late Model Series winner Chub Frank in front of standing room only crowd at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Sunday night.

Actually, Chesebro never waits for anything. “It is great to win here on this special night. I busted it pretty good at Ransomville Friday, won last night at McKean, but this is really great. Todd [Hanson] left the top open and that is where I wanted to be. He gave it a great run, but I really wanted this one. We patched the car up and even have some balsa wood jammed in to hold things in position. It will be interesting to see if the balsa is still there,” shared a very hot, tired, and happy Chesebro from Victory Lane.

Todd Hanson and Jeff Chesebro shared the front row for the start of the 30 lap contest. Hanson took the lead at the green and led the first five laps using the extreme bottom of the very fast 1/3 mile clay oval. Chesebro went to the top and dancing with the devil. Chese was able to power past Hanson on lap six and never relinquish the lead despite two early race cautions which put the pair side by side for restarts.

“I have raced with Jeff for a very long time. We have raced many laps at Bradford and McKean County for more years than I want to remember, but nothing ever matched what we did here tonight in front of that many race fans. This was a treat. I wanted the win, but runner-up to Jeff on our second start of the year [first 2007 Series event] is OK. I’ll get him at Eriez next week,” shared Hanson as he prepared for the return trip home to Franklinville, NY.

Randy Hall the Defending Series Champion and 2007 Merrittville winner rounded out the podium finishers with another strong run. Hall came from 13th at the start. He broke into the top five on lap 23. Hall dispatched Rick Baker to fifth one lap later. The next five laps Hall and Series rookie Mike Williams staged a spirited battle for the show spot with Hall prevailing on lap 28. Time ran out and Hall had recorded his sixth top ten finish in six events and added to his point lead.

Mike Williams continues to impress everyone with another strong run in his rookie year. Sunday’s fourth place finish was his best ever.

Matt Cobb is another driver who has been consistently fast this season. After finishing third at Humberstone and Ransomville the Bradford, PA driver was hoping for “something a little better” he slipped to tick to finish fifth at the Capital of DIRTCar Racing Northeast.

Jim Johnson, the Humberstone winner, left his daughter’s high school graduation as soon as the last diploma was awarded and met up with his race car and crew at CCFS just as the qualifying racers were being called to the track. She is now a graduate and he has a check for his sixth place finish.

Paul Grigsby moved up the point ladder another notch with a strong and steady seventh place finish.

Steve Dixon was in the middle of some outstanding racing mid-pack for most of the 30 laps. The Woodhull winner broke loose and moved into the top ten on lap 19. He passed Rick Baker and Donnie Smith both on lap 28 to finish 8th.

Quick Rick Baker had his best 2007 Series run with many laps in the top five. He slipped to ninth at the checker to earn his best finish of the year.

Donnie Smith made the redraw for the first time. He drew the number five starting spot and rewarded his Schuyler Racing Team with their best ever Series finish to round out the top ten.
