NCRA Sprints to Race in Steve King Fundraiser

Posted by Tom Ames  |  06/27/07

PARK CITY, Kan. (June 27, 2007) – After being rained out Father’s Day, the O’Reilly NCRA Sprint Car Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol, will try again to get in their fundraiser for the Steve King Foundation.

Originally scheduled for June 17, a heavy downpour forced its postponement until July 3. Series and track officials still plan on several fundraising activities to benefit the Foundation.

The winged warriors last raced over Memorial Day weekend as Garry Lee Maier of Cimarron, Kan., swept all three shows and moved into the point lead. The two-time defending series champion now has 59 career wins and three series championships. He has won 14 of 35 shows since returning full time to the series in 2005.

Don Droud Jr. was the point leader going into that weekend. With a sixth, a fifth and a DNF, the Lincoln, Neb., driver is now second, 80 points behind Maier. Former NCRA rookie of the year Stu Snyder of Waverly, Neb., recorded two seconds and a 16th. He remained third in the standings, 45 points behind Droud.

The series ran just once at 81 Speedway last year with Maier taking the checker, the second of his five wins on the season.

King, formerly of Jetmore, Kan., died of injuries sustained in a racing accident at the 2006 Knoxville Nationals. He won two NCRA championships (2002-03) and has 17 career victories, which is second all time.

The Foundation provides financial assistance to individuals affiliated with dirt track racing, or their immediate families, who either become injured or are killed. For more information about the foundation, visit their Web site at www.stevekingfoundation.org.
