Oldfield Crowned Roosters Cup Champion

Posted by Tom Ames  |  06/28/07

Gold Coast racer Luke Oldfield survived a late challenge from Wayne Harrison-Watt to take top honours in the inaugural Roosters Cup V8 Dirt Modified series. The six-round Queensland –based tournament was new initiative this past season, and has seen V8 Dirt Modified numbers swell to unprecedented levels in the Sunshine state.

Although Oldfield appeared the unbackable favourite heading into the Series, it was far from a one-horse race. Matt Pascoe, Simon Jupe and a resurgent Darren Latimer each shared Round wins with Oldfield, while Harrison-Watt the Mr Constancy of the Series, snaring second overall after a string of podium finishes. Darren Latimer, winner of the final round, annexed third overall in the Series in his return season.

“Pretty satisfying” is how Oldfield described his Series win. “It got pretty tight there at the end in the points with Wayne under the double points scenario, that kept it alive but it worked out pretty well”

“I was watching the points, even though I had a good run at the start. I had a bad one on that double point round and if I had of had another bad one it would have been a bit close”

Series organiser and major sponsor Ray Klarich was more than happy with the first running of the Roosters Cup, which garnered support from Super Rooster, Golden Cockerel Chickens, Ian Boettcher Race Parts, Bilstein Shocks and Keith 4 Wheels.

“It was much better than we expected” said Klarich “We averaged over 20 cars per round of the Roosters Cup, everyone has been really supporting and they keep coming back. We had 33 cars that competed and we are over the moon.”

Klarich went on to say “We’re about car numbers to show the Promotors what our division is all about and I think we have bloody well shown that this year. The Promotors have got to see potential in these things. We ran with Sprintcars at the Queensland Title and it was incredible. We had a whole heap of people come up to us and ask what does it take to get in one. And we are getting that all the time”

Planning is now well underway for season 2007/08 where it is expected V8 Dirt Modifieds will continue their growth in popularity throughout Queensland.
