Blaney Wins 3rd Speedweek Event at Limaland
(Lima, OH) The O'Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions and the 25th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek promoters had to know that when you dangle a $50,000 carrot, the biggest rabbit is going to show up at the dinner table. Dale Blaney established himself as the only driver eligible for the huge Speedweek bonus by virtue of his win at Limaland Motorsports Park.
On a beautiful night for racing, Limaland was bursting at the seams with race fans from around the country that make the annual pilgrimage to the Buckeye State for an incredible week of sprint car racing. Danny Smith laid down the top qualifying lap in a time of 11.099 seconds ( just a tenth off the track record) on a lightning fast racetrack. Heat race wins went to Mark Keegan, Dale Blaney, Cory Seeling, and Paul May. Local star, Mike Dunlap, won the C-main and Chad Blonde led the way in the University of Northwestern Ohio B-main.
Kenny Jacobs ran away and hid during the first 20 laps of the 40-lap feature race. Like most races at Limaland, lapped traffic would be a challenge for Jacobs whose car seemed content on the highside while the "Tall Cool One", Dale Blaney, silently stalked the tail tank of Jacobs. On lap 25, Byron Reed slipped past Blaney only to relinquish second place two laps later. Blaney charged past Jacobs with 10 to go. There were two restarts in the last ten laps but Jacobs could not muster the speed to get by Blaney. Dale Blaney continued his dominance of Speedweek and positioned himself for one of the biggest paydays in sprint car racing should he win in the final night at Eldora.
The Professional Computer Company Modifieds feature was 20 laps for $1500 and a newcomer to Limaland, Brian Shaw, rode into town and hauled the loot back to his home state of Illinois. Shaw drove a masterful race and held off the advances of the reigning, two-time track champion, Terry Hull and a late-race charge from Darryl Banks. Shaw said, "I heard this was a great place to race but this is incredible. It's a smooth track and great facilities. I hope to make it back for the King of the Quarter Mile."
Your next chance to be part of the celebration of 72 years of racing action is next week when Limaland Motorsports Park presents Meet the Drivers Night and the Bobby Keysor Memorial Race. The Professional Computer Company Modifieds, Bud Thunderstocks and Elwer Fence Sprints will be in action on Ohio's Quarter-Mile of Thunder. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and racing on America's premier quarter-mile begins at 7:30 p.m.
