Rain, Rain, Rain, Race…...Four new faces in victory lane with an altered format.
Batavia, NY June 30, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
The rains rolled into Batavia around 5pm which would downpour on and off for about an hour and when most thought the show would be called for the night the clouds broke and the packers hit the track to start grooming to get the track back into race condition for Kerry Ball & Totem Pole Express, Armed Forces Night.
In the drivers meeting it was decided that the heat races would be a scratch and the drivers would draw for position for a features only night and would be issued hot laps in the place of the heat races.
Dan Norton and Nick Skeet would pace the field to the green for the 15 lap feature. Norton would jump to the early lead. Jason Hull was on the charge going by Skeet for 2nd and setting his sights on the leader Dan Norton. The yellow would fly on lap 4 for Ken Hixenbaugh when Hixenbaugh and Ed Neal would come together in turn 1. Hull would take the lead on the restart and Russ Wassner would begin to pressure Skeet for the 3rd spot. Skeet would slide up the banking and Wassner and Brandon Aradine would advance positions. Hull moved out to a commanding lead and Bobby Dickinson was the mover in the field as he reeled in the 4th place runner Aradine. Randy Barkley was also on the move as he claimed Dickinson’s 4th place spot in the running order. Hull would go on to win the Dickinson’s Auto Service Mini Stock Feature followed by Dan Norton and Russ Wassner.
Colton Chappius would pace the Bobcat of Buffalo Street Stocks to the green for their 20 lap feature. Chappius would bolt to the lead but the yellow would fly for exhaust debris on the speedway in turn 4 and turn 1. Chappius, Dan Pries and David Downs would take off from the pack but again would only get one lap in as Joey Spicola and Carl Shetler would hook bumpers and spin out in turn 4. Chappius would motor away from the pack leaving Pries and Downs battling for the 2nd position. Downs would make the pass on Pries for 2nd spot and the yellow would fly once again for a slow Ken Begnouche. Begnouche suffered a flat tire that would send him pit side for repairs. Bill Weller would muscle his way to 4th position on lap 11 and collected another position when he passed Pries for 3rd on lap 12. Chappius was in another zip code as he opened up a full straight away lead over Downs but Weller had closed in on Downs’ bumper and began to challenge for the 2nd spot. Frank Moyer also got into the mix as he caught Weller. Chappius would cruise to his first feature of the season followed by David Downs and Bill Weller.
The Greenlief’s Restaurant Pro Stocks would see Butch Zimmerman and Mike Martin start on the front row. Pete Stefanski wouldn’t have such a lucky draw this week as he drew the final starting spot. Zimmerman took the early lead with Mike Martin in tow. The field would go yellow when Eric Greenlief spun in turn 2. On the restart Mike Martin used the high side to take over the top spot from Butch Zimmerman. The yellow would again fly when the leader Mike Martin jumped the cushion in turn 3 and come to a stop in turn 4. Zimmerman who inherited the lead from the spinning Martin would lead the field for one lap before Steve Lewis took the point. Pete Stefanski muscled his way to 3rd by lap 8 and was looking to take the 2nd spot from Zimmerman. Barnes would look under Stefanski but the yellow lights would come on when John Zimmerman spun and came to rest in turn 4. The field would complete 3 more circuits before the caution would come out when Brett Martin slowed the field when he spun at the top of turn 4. Zimmerman would add some pressure to Lewis in his 15 year old race car, but Lewis would still retain the lead and start to pull away from Zimmerman and Stefanski. On the last lap Zimmerman would catch Lewis but couldn’t complete the pass and Lewis would go on to score his first feature win at Genesee Speedway of the season.
Don Spatorico and Ricky Newton would lead the Troyer Race Cars Sportman’s for the 25 lap feature. Spatorico would jump to the point as Stubby Pangrazio and Rob Pratt would move to the 2nd and 3rd positions. Yellow would hit the speedway on lap 2 as Greg Mrzywka came to rest at the top of turn 4. On the restart Rob Pratt was a man on a mission and took the point from Spatorico on the back chute. Pratt opened a rather large margin on the 2nd place runner but would have it cut down as starter John Veach would wave the yellow as John Baker would take a trip down the bottom of turn 4 kicking up a lot of water on the track. Pratt would open up a big lead again to have it taken away when Mrzywka would bring out his 3rd yellow flag of the event ending his night. Pangrazio put on a show as he out muscled Spatorico for the 2nd spot. For the 3rd time Pratt had checked out on the field to have it taken away as John Baker spun again in turn 4. Tim Downs took a wild ride as he blasted the front stretch wall and gave the grandstand spectators a good view of his undercarriage. No matter how many caution periods hit the speedway, Rob Pratt had the whole field covered as he easily won the 25 lap event followed by Stubby Pangrazio and Don Spatorico.
Pete Waldron and Dave DuBois were the front row sitters for the BDK Construction 360 Late Models 20 lap feature. Dubois jumped to the early lead with JJ Mazur following his lead. DuBois would control the race until Rich Mogavero got loose collecting Bob Babbit and Derek Boyle. DuBois would again check out and Pete Waldron would fly by Mazur to take 2nd place but would only hold the position for a lap as Mazur would reclaim the spot. DuBois’ lead would close up when the yellow came out on lap 6 when Josh Pangrazio came to rest at the top of turn 3 and 4. Carl Shetler would bring out yet another caution when he wailed on the turn 4 wall. DuBois would again retain his lead but the rae was marred again by yet another caution period as JJ Mazur slid off the track in turn 4. By lap 13 TJ Newton had worked his way up to 3rd from his 8th starting position and was showing he had a little more left and could challenge for a couple more spots. Jim Johnson utilized the high side to take the 5th spot from Tim Kaufmann and was looking to take 4th from Ron Mogavero before Babbit brought the yellow out as he spun in turn 3. On the restart DuBois didn’t look as stout as he did earlier in the race as Pete Waldron was all over him like a dirty shirt. DuBois would hold off the hard charging Waldron and collect his first Genesee Speedway win of the 2007 season followed by Pete Waldron and TJ Newton who all turned in there best runs of the season.
