(Woodhull, NY) The Annual Jim Williams Memorial Trophy Races were run this past Saturday at the Woodhull Raceway and with the largest crowd on hand in the history of the facility, fans were treated to the most spectacular Fireworks demonstration in the tracks 43 year history.

Dave Youse had never run a race car until the start of the 2007 season and decided to give the all new Crate Sportsman Division a try. He had gone through growing pains just like any rookie, but his continual growth behind the wheel had made him a serious contender for a win over the past few weeks. Youse was able to put it all together on Saturday, June 30 to win the 20 lap Crate Sportsman feature and take home the prestigious Jim Williams Memorial Trophy compliments of Wade’s Building Supply of Addison, the nightly event sponsor. Countless yellow flags could not stop Youse as he was chased across the line by Casey Pavlick and for the second consecutive week it was a bride’s maid finish for the recent high school graduate. Third went to Bill Brewer, Nate Delong was fourth with Dave Yehl rounding the top five. Six thru ten were Bill VanEtten, Tony Hooker, Joe Dgien, Bill Shea and Wesley Campbell. Qualifying heats went to Kenny Peoples Jr. and Junior Green.

In the Might 358 Modified Division, Curt VanPelt has made the Annual Jim Williams Memorial Event his personal play ground and this years event would be no exception as for the former Mr. DIRT Champion it was a third consecutive trip to victory lane in the event and his second trip in as many weeks to the winners circle. With countless caution flags to slow the event the VanPelt Brothers took full advantage of the opportunity to keep early race leader, Steve Hartman Jr. within sight. At the three quarter mark, Curt was able to pass Hartman for the lead and bring younger brother Billy along for second and that is how the two would finish the 25 lap marathon. Hartman settled for third at the end followed by Bob Davis, Stacy Jackson, Bryan Terwilliger, Mike Jackson, Dale Welty, Donnie Lawson and Kevin Chilson. Heat wins went to Stacy Jackson, Bob Davis and Bryan Terwilliger with Brian Swarthout taking the consolation event.

The NAPA Super Stocks were next on the line and like the two previous feature events it was once again yellow fever for the Classy Looking Group with numerous spins and fender benders. The largest field of the season found 24 cars taking the opening green and with that track owner, Vern Wasson will pay the bonus money in his quest to bring back the big numbers in the once stout class. Bruce Miller has been an on again off again racer at Woodhull and when time permits he enjoys the challenge of the high banks and his car worked to perfection this week as he claimed his first ever win at Woodhull. Many time Woodhull winner, Larry Knowles could not keep pace with the high flying Miller in the late going and had to settle for a respectable second place finish followed by Mikey Wonderling, Glen Whritenour and Rich Marlatt for fifth. Mick Seeley led the charge of the next group of five across the line followed by Jeremy Wonderling, Ken Peoples Sr., Sparky Hills and Eric Matthews. Earlier evening heat wins went to Dave Miller, Whritenour and Bryce Davis.

The Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stocks were next on the line and it looked like Mike Williams was poised to take home the trophy named in memory of his late father, but a late race incident with a lap car put Williams to the rear, the lapped car to the pits and Josh Nobriga into victory lane. For Nobriga it was a matter of being at the right place at the right time as he nailed down win number two of the 2007 season as he was followed by Dan Gordon, Rod Mullen, Barry Payne, Brian Knowles, Zach Sutton, Jay Johnson, Jeff Smith and Lance Baker. Heat wins went to Sutton, Knowles and Williams.

The Signs Plus of Kanona Mini Stocks were next on the line for their 20 lap feature and like each prior feature event, yellow fever was the name of the game with countless caution flags slowing the pace and keeping the field bunched up. However, in the end it was Brian Grant Sr. putting on a flawless performance in capturing his third feature in of 2007 as he held a comfortable margin over Mike Smith with Art Goodier third, Adam Austin fourth and A.J. Costley fifth. Six thru ten were Brett Marlatt, Tracy Dunn, Lynn Burrell, Dennis Erdmann and Bill Groover. Heat wins were won by Brett Crawford, Brian Butler and Jason Ketrow.

Last but not least the LaBarron Brother Repair and Parts Front Wheel Drive Division was on the track for their 20 lap feature. A couple of bone jarring crashes on the front straight put several cars on the trailer early, but when the feature was finally decided, J.R. Hoppe had wrestled the lead from Ron Daily Jr. to claim his third feature win of 07. Kevin Patton was also able to get by Daily in the closing laps to claim second place with Daily Jr. third followed by Isaac Byler, Gary Baker, Mark Schenck, Nick Moorehouse, Brian Conley and Tom McGlynn. Heat wins went to Byler, Daily Jr. and Schenck with Tom McGlynn taking the 12 lap B-main.

Next week the Empire Super Sprints will make their lone appearance at Woodhull for 2007. The Crate Sportsman Division will have the night off. Butters Homes of Mansfield will be onboard to host the event.
