A perfect day greeted a good field of cars and a nice crowd on Domaille Collision and John Gardner Cabinet night at the speedway. Also on hand for the night was the Minnesota Pork Producers who gave away free Pork Loin samples to those in attendance at the track.
The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds hit the track for the feature action. Jared Boumeester made the switch from the full fendered WISSOTA Super Stocks to the Midwest Modifieds this year and looked good early on in the feature action leading the field to the green. Behind him Jerry Young and Albert Wytaske were two wide for position as the rest of the field ran in packs trying to get sorted out. With four laps completed the first caution flew. Boumeester led on the restart with Bobby Swanson moving into the second position. On the next lap Swanson moved to the low side of Boumeester and took lead of the event. With eleven to go Young moved into second followed quickly by Brandon Davis in third, followed by Boumeester and Kenny Wytaske and Bryan Hernandez side by side for fourth. With three more laps completed Davis was working on Young for second as Swanson held onto a comfortable lead. As the race wore on the bottom of the speedway ended up being the preferred line for the drivers as they battled around the track. A caution with five to go was not what Swanson wanted to see with some strong cars behind him. Swanson kept his cool and held on for the lead with Young in second and Kenny Wytaske third. They kept in this formation all the way to the checkers with Swanson winning his first ever WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature race.
The Tim’s Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stocks pulled onto the track next with Nathan Finley taking the early lead as the pack ran two and three wide for the early circuits. Danny Hanson settled into second with Cory Crapser and Dan Holland racing for third. On an early restart Finley, Hanson and Crapser raced three wide for the lead around the speedway until Hanson and Finley touch on the backstraight with Hanson ending his night with heavy right side damage. On the ensuing restart Crapser drove hard into one and dove under Finley to take the lead. Front runner Scot Nelson was sitting in fourth after completing a race long battle with Dan Holland. Chuck Nerland quietly sat in third after the restart and watched the front two from a slight distance as Finley looked for a way to get back around Crapser up front. Crapser was not to be denied on this night as he took the clean sweep with his first win of the season at the speedway.
Chris Klinger led the US Army WISSOTA Super Stocks from the drop of the green flag with Kevin Hager and Chris Groth battling for second early on. Dan Gullikson and Cole Queensland were right behind them in their own race. Groth gained control of second on the third lap as Jason Gabrielson worked up to race with Gullikson and Queensland. With five completed Gullikson took over the fourth spot and two laps later worked past Hager for third. With twelve to go the race for the lead got interesting as Groth was working the inside of Klinger in every corner but Klinger had the momentum on his side in the middle groove. Groth eventually gained the spot with Gullikson soon following into second. The pass of the race took place after a caution with five to go. With everyone using the lower and middle of the track the fourth place machine of Gabrielson decided to go for it up high on the track. It worked and within one lap had moved from fourth to first running his mount around the outside of the front three. Gullikson was able to move past Groth for second while Troy Brand worked his way inside the top five at the finish. Gabrielson’s win was his second straight and third of the season in the competitive class.
The high horsepowered Valley Featherlite WISSOTA Late Models took to the track next for their feature race action with Andrew McKay taking the early lead. Nick Kramer hot off his first ever heat race win in the class looked great in second while another rookie Lucas Peterson sat in fourth behind Paul Novotny. Keith Foss quickly worked past Peterson and then as Kramer pushed up in two Novotny and Foss moved into second and third. Foss moved into second with twenty to go and worked on gaining ground on McKay up front. With eighteen to go Foss was working lower on the track than McKay but didn’t have the momentum to complete a pass. Nick Herrick now made his presence known as the worked into the top five. A restart with eight to go saw the Novotny machine pound the turn one wall hard ending his night. On the ensuing restart Mckay still held the lead but Foss was going to give it to him easily and kept his pressure on eventually working under McKay to take over the point. Herrick worked past Kramer for third with Lance Matthees working into the top five on the last couple circuits. Foss took home his third win of the season followed by McKay and Herrick.
The open wheeled EZ Fabricating USRA modifieds were the last on the track with Mike Sorensen using the outside front row to take the early lead. Brad Bakken and Todd Scharkey made light contact down the back straight as they raced for second, Bakken dropped back slightly from the contact with Brad Waits moving into third. Mike Hejna moved into fourth early with three and four wide battles through the corners early on. A restart with twenty to go saw Sorensen lead with heavy pressure from Waits with Steve Wetzstein using the high line to move up into the top five. With seventeen to go Wetzstein moved past Scharkey for fourth after Hejna completed a pass for third. Sorensen continued to lead as he ran mid track while Waits moved from the bottom early on up to the topside of the track but was unable to get cleanly alongside of the leader. A couple more quick cautions saw five laps dropped from the length of the race with Sorensen still leading at the wire. Hejna was able to complete a late pass for second with Waits in third.
Next week Deer Creek Speedway will play host to the Tri-Star WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series on Saturday night with a huge field of cars expected as all five classes race in action at the speedway all vying for the increased purses in all classes.
