PJ PETERS WINS THE 50 LAPS PRO STOCK FEATURE AND DAGENAIS DOES IT AGAIN IN MODIFIEDS

By Martin Bélanger

CORNWALL, On – Sunday July 1, 2007 – Another capacity crowd was on hand on Canada Day, long weekend special. It was the first race of the Mohawk Race Parts and Accessories Series for Pro-Stock. This full fender class had a 50 laps feature.

Eighteen cars answered the call for the 50 laps Mohawk Race Parts feature race as Clayton Benedict takes the lead on the initial green and was able to lead the first 20 laps of the race until Ricky Thompson passed him from the inside in turn 1 and 2 on lap 21 and Benedict brought the third caution of the race for front flat tire after hitting with Thompson for the lead. On the restart, Thompson was able to keep the lead and took a good lead over the field while a good battled occurred for positions 2 to 4 for many laps. A caution on lap 47 for Steve Johnston, slowed the field. On the restart, Thompson kept the lead but he got high in turn two and PJ Peters took this opportunity to take the lead from him and was able to keep it and wins the first race of this series. Stéphane Lebrun finishes second, Gilles Godard was third, George Renaud fourth and Joey Ladouceur rounding out the top 5. Clayton Benedict, Gilles Godard and Stéphane Lebrun had won the heat races.

Ron Valade grabbed the lead on the initial green of the 30 laps modified feature race. A caution on lap 3 slowed the field. Valade kept the lead on the restart but another yellow occurred on lap 6 for Dany Bilodeau. Stéphane Lafrance used the outside lane to pass Valade on the restart and build a good lead over the field until another caution occurred on lap 20 for Brian McDonald who got a flat tire. On the restart, Lafrance retain the lead for three other laps when McDonald brought another caution on lap 23 for problems with his car. Lafrance kept the lead but a hard charging Pierre Dagenais from the outside came from fifth to second on that restart and closing rapidly on Lafrance. The last two laps gave the fans a great battle to remember as Dagenais won a photo finish race over Lafrance to win his second feature in a row at Cornwall. Dave Heaslip was third, Alain Boisvert finished fourth and Perry Francis rounded out the top 5. Ron Valade, Carey Terrance and Perry Francis won the qualification races.

The semi-pro category then took the track for their 15 laps feature as George McPhee took a considerable lead on the initial green and lead for the first four laps until a caution came on lap 4. McPhee was able to keep the lead on the restart and lead for another 3 laps when Dominic Gauvreau brought the second feature on lap 7. Again McPhee retained the lead until a tangle between Marc Lalonde, Derek Cryderman, Stuart Mullin, the top 3 in points on lap 9. Lalonde and Mullin were able to stay on the track. On the following green, McPhee in the lead until a multi-car tangle which including a few top runners that were sent to the pits because of this accident. George McPhee survived to another caution to win the feature. Nathan Delormier was second, Jeremy Gougeon third, Dominic Gauvreau fourth and Kevin McCrae was fifth. Mathieu Aubin, Steve Herrigan and George McPhee won the heat races

Fourteen years old, Gage Morin took the lead on the initial start to lead wire to wire in the rookie expert feature to capture his first win in his young career. He`s also the first graduate from the karting category to win a feature. Marc Usereau finished second and Corey Wheeler was third. Corey Wheeler and Gage Morin won the expert heat race.

Justin Leroux grabbed the lead in the novice rookie feature but Franklin Colpitts passed him on the first lap and just like Morin did, he led all laps in the race to win his first feature race of the year in this category. Denis Séguin and Kevin Dejong were second and third respectively. Sylvain Gougeon and Franklin Colpitts won the novice heats.

The small shower that the speedway received during the heats, really quicken the track because modifieds ran low to mid 13s laps. Another great car count with over 90 cars in the pits. Do not miss next week, as the Big Block Modifieds will be in town for their annual visit. Awkesasne Mohawk Casino will present the 100 laps feature race. Come and see the big names in DIRT such as Hearn, Decker, Fuller, Alan Johnson and Danny Johnson, race against our local drivers. Be here early because time trials are starting at 6pm.
