Erie, PA…Jeff Chesebro tamed a wild Eriez Speedway in spectacular fashion on Sunday July 1 and in the process claimed his second 2007 BRP CanAm Series victory.
Chesebro, 42, of Farmers Valley, PA lined his Follman Rental Properties / Chese’s Performance Exhaust Black Beauty up in the fifth starting position. He moved past a stout running Mikey Wonderling to move to fourth on lap three. Chesebro’s lap four victim was McKean County neighbor Matt Cobb. Laps five and six were spent watching Randy Hall and Jon Rivers wage a torrid battle for the top spot. Hall went down in turns one and two while Rivers lasted until turns three and four on lap seven.
As the field raced past Spanky Hall’s office on lap seven it was Chesebro in front. That is where Chese’s CRS Grand Prix with Bob Repine’s masterpiece of a 360 Chevy between the rails stayed for the duration of the 30 lap battle.
After making his way to the front and holding his buddy Jon Rivers at bay until lap 22 Chesebro had a new threat – Bruce Miller. Miller, fresh off a win at Woodhull on Saturday night, was charging to the front with reckless abandon. Miller had come from 22nd at the start and was slicing his CRS Grand Prix through traffic is grand style. Miller got to the rear bumper of Chesebro on lap 27, but slipped and lost momentum and remains winless on the 2007 Series.
Miller’s heroics earned him the DART Machinery Hard Charger Award.
Jim Johnson again gave the Ford fans something to cheer about when he earned his fourth podium finish of the 2007 edition of the BRP CanAm Series. Johnson and Jon Rivers spend Saturday nights battling at Genesee Speedway. Their side-by-side show for about 20 laps have earned the BRP CanAm Series an invitation for a return trip to Eriez Speedway in 2008.
Jon Rivers really likes to win. All race drivers like to win. For 2007 Rivers is happy just to finish. It has been a very difficult year for the Basom, NY driver. Jon was the happiest forth place finisher that we have seen in a long time. The finish which means he did not have a mechanical failure or a crash and tonight that was almost as good as a win - almost.
Tom Schnars made his first BRP CanAm start of the year and turned in a crowd pleasing fifth place finish. Eriez is the closest the Series has ever raced to Schnars’ Jamestown home. Fifth is Schnars’ best ever in about a dozen starts with the Series over the past five years.
Matt Cobb, Randy Hall, Mikey Wonderling, Paul Grigsby, and Pete Waldron completed the top five.
