Rich Vleck, OHSWEKEN, Ont. (July 6, 2007)- The last time Bobby Breen won a feature he did not even have his driver’s license, on Friday Night he ran away from a stout ASCS Patriot field to capture his first win in over three years.
The 18-year-old from Savannah, NY won from the Engler Pole to capture the 25-lap feature on an ultra-fast Ohsweken Speedway. Even though he started up front, Breen had plenty of work to do to win the event.
Kyle Moffit took the initial lead from the outside pole, but Breen was able to muscle back the top spot on lap three in his Pearl Technologies No. 9. Moffit would again capture the lead on lap 11 when Breen slid high in turn one just before the race’s first caution flew for Jared Zimbadi. On the restart Breen jumped back into the lead and from there would not be touched.
“I’ve just got to thank my crew, my parents and my sponsors for give me a great car,” said the often-reserved Breen in Victory Lane. “I like this track cause you have to run the caution and it’s right on the edge, I wouldn’t miss this race.”
After winning the Pole Dash the only response Breen had to the question of if he could win the A-Main was, “Maybe”. He turned that question into a reality.
With a handful of cautions over the second half of the 10th A-Main of the 2007 ASCS Patriot Season, Breen had a number of fast competitors that were able to restart just a few cars back from the No. 9 J&J. Patriot point leader Chuck Hebing climbed as high as fourth from his 19th place starting position, but when the breaks went on the No. 45 he jumped the berm on lap 18, allowing Breen and the rest of the pack to pull away to safety.
The final hurdle “Dobbers” had to clear came with three laps to go when his nose-wing support broke, leaving him vulnerable for the final restart. Like all of the other restarts, Breen would pull out to a safe distance and cruise to the win.
It was the first win for the Breen Brothers away from Black Rock and the first in three years. Despite running in the top five a multitude of times at “The Big O”, neither Bobby or his older Brother Blake were able to put a run together as they did on Friday. The win helped the Savannah, NY team bring home $1,400 with support from Red Bear Hand Cleaner and Shuttleworth Asphalt Sealing.
Kyle Moffit was in second until lap 22 when he spun around over the berm of turn two, bringing his Hills Trucking No. 77 to a stop. That would hand over the runner-up position to “Fast” Fred Cade who withstood the advances of track owner Glenn Styres to cross in second.
Cade, a former modified competitor who has run a part-time sprint car schedule, had his best finish with the ASCS Patriots as he stayed in the top-three the entire race and capitalized on Moffit’s misfortune to come home second. The St. Catherines, Ontario competitor also won National Parts Peddler Heat No. 1 with an astounding lap of 13.6 around the 3/8-mile.
Glenn Styres, who resides just 20 yards from turn two, faded as far back as 10th, but was able to climb back to third, just missing out on second at the line. It was the best career finish in ASCS Patriot history for “The Ohsweken Flyer”.
Scott Kreutter also scored his best career finish with the ASCS Patriots, as well as in a sprint car in general, with a fourth place showing. On his first night at Ohsweken, the rookie competitor moved up from his eighth starting spot to snap a streak of four straight races finishing seventh.
Bryan Howland made his return to a sprint car for the first time in over a month with a solid top-five. The winner of the Patriot event at Ohsweken in 2006 started deep in the field and quietly moved his way forward all race.
Keith Dempster was as high as third in the feature but became loose after the final restart to come across in sixth in the Ohsweken Speedway No. 5. Dempster was also the winner of heat three.
Dain Naida became the first driver from Michigan to run an ASCS Patriot stand-alone event and did the Wolverine State proud, climbing from his 21st place starting spot to cross in seventh, easily capturing the KSE Hard Charger of the race.
Don Adamczyk scored his second-straight 8th place with the ASCS Patriots at Ohsweken, the track where the “Williamsville Warrior” was fourth in the 2006 Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.
Chuck Hebing finished in ninth, a minor victory after all he went through on the night. Before he ever took the green flag in heat three he damaged his primary Maxim Mount when he came together with Kevin Job, Dain Naida, Don Adamczyk and Jared Zimbardi. He would be forced to a backup car, where he would win the Bobcat of Buffalo B-Main and move as high as fourth before suffering one final blow with the breaks and slipping back to ninth.
Kyle Patrick joined Naida and Hebing as drivers that transferred from the Bobcat of Buffalo B-Main that climbed inside the top-10. After breaking a drive shaft in hot laps, the “Tilbury Tornado” was still able to salvage a solid run on the night.
Jeff Cook was running in third with seven laps to go and moving forward when he cut a right rear, sending him to the back and once again plaguing the Antwerp, NY driver with bad luck.
The feature was slowed by five cautions, all for single car incidents. Over the course of the event, 11 different drivers were in the top-five at some point of the race, almost half of the field. The night was free from red flags.
In all, 29 cars checked into the pits on a beautiful Friday Evening. The Speedway had just completed renovations, which included new grandstands, new fences and new clay. This gem of the ASCS Patriot tour will be revisited later in the year for the Arrow Express Canadian Sprint Car Nationals on September 14-15.
