HENSEL DOMINATES TRI STAR CHALLENGE RACE

By Bill Nelson

July 7, 2007

Spring Valley Mn

With almost unbearable high temps and high humidity a large contingent of WISSOTA Late Model drivers and a great crowd showed up on this early July weekend. 39 cars checked into the back gate for the Tri-Star Engine WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series event paying $3,000 to win. A light breeze blew through the facility keeping spectators as cool as possible on the hot 93 degree day. A total of 118 cars checked into the back gate on 1-800-radiator and KTTC TV night at the speedway.

First up for their feature event was the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds with Andrew Wiste leading the way after lap one. The field behind Wiste was three and four wide early as they battled for position. Bobby Swanson the winner from the previous week moved from fifth to second on lap two with Jeff Brauer and Bryan Hernandez battling for third behind him. Hernandez and Brauer had taken heat wins earlier in the night along with young Brandon Davis. Wiste looked strong early on up front while Bob Bunne and Kenny Wytaske raced for fifth. With everyone working the low side of the track Hernandez decided to take a chance and went up high on the speedway trying to get an upper groove to come in. A caution with ten to go saw Swanson, Wiste and Hernandez go three wide for the lead for the next lap. Swanson took the lead Wiste in second. Brauer and Hernandez continued their race for third. Hernandez had the top working now and kept the spot while Wytaske moved under Brauer for fourth. With five to go Hernandez flew around the outside of Wiste to take over second and quickly moved alongside of Swanson up front. Behind him Wiste, Wytaske and Brauer were now three wide for third with Brauer eventually taking that spot. On the last lap Swanson held on for the win by a nose while Wytaske cleared Brauer for the third spot.

Nathan Finley and Scot Nelson took early heat wins in the Tim’s Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stock class but Scott Olson lead lap one of the feature. Finley ran in second in a race with Steve Eischens while Nelson ran side by side with AJ Zvorak for fifth behind Chuck Nerland in fourth. Fifteen to go and Nelson moved into fourth while Eischens and Finley still battled for second. Two laps later after disposing of Eischens Finley started working on the leader. Eleven to go and Finley had control of the race while Nelson worked up into the second spot followed by Zvorak. Finley slowly pulled away from the field over the remaining laps while Zvorak and Nelson raced the last part of the race swapping spots on the track. Zvorak came home in second with Nelson in third. The results of a protest for the bottom half of the Finley car after the races was unknown at time of press release, which could effect the outcome of the event.

In the us army WISSOTA Super Stock division Kevin Hager paced the field to the green after pole sitter Ryan Siegle pulled off the track during the pace lap. Chris Groth and Ted Marrs raced hard for second early with Groth taking the spot. On the next lap Cole Queensland took over third with Ross Dixon and Jason Gabrielson racing for fourth. Hager continued to run up front while Dixon moved into third and then started working on Groth for second. As the two raced hard Gabrielson moved around Queensland for fourth. The top four were in a tight pack as they ran around the speedway. A caution with ten to go with Dixon, Groth and Gabrielson all battling for second saw Dixon go to the tail. Hager continued the strong run up front on the restart but two laps later Groth and Gabrielson made it three wide for the lead. Chris Klinger and Queensland followed the battle around the track. Hager dropped back to third on the next lap with Groth taking the top spot. With five to go Gabrielson and Groth touch with both cars getting out of shape slightly allowing Klinger to move into the lead. Groth was able to rebound for the second spot holding off Gabrielson.

Brad Waits led lap number one and lap twenty five enroute to another win in the EZ Fabricating USRA modified field. But the win didn’t come easy with pressure and hard charges from throughout the field. Mike Hejna was the first to challenge as he took over the second spot. Track was fast as the highpowered open wheeled machines flew around the speedway. With three down Hejna pushed up the speedway with Mike Sorensen and Tommy Myer moving past him for second and third. A restart with twenty one to go saw Sorensen in second and putting pressure on Waits on the inside of the speedway. Jason Krohn was making his presence known as the worked past Hejna for fourth. Another restart with eighteen to go saw Waits continue to lead, Sorensen second and Krohn and Myer battling for third. The run for Hejna came to an end as he slapped the turn two wall hard ending his night. On the restart Krohn moved alongside of Waits a couple of times each circuit of the track for next three laps but was unable to complete a pass Sorensen and Myer had a great race going for third with Sorensen up high and Myer down low they ran side by side for many laps. A final caution with five to go saw Myer and Sorensen get around Krohn for second and third. Sorensen held a slight edge as Myer pulled alongside at the completion of each lap. Waits came home with the win, Sorensen held on for second and Myer third.

The forty lap Tri-Star WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series was up next. Local driver Nate Wasmund took home the win in heat four and was the passing point leader going into the Pole dash. The dash saw Deer Creek Regulars Kerry Hanson, Jay Ihrke, Nate Wasmund and Mark Teske all in the dash along with defending track champion Adam Hensel. After the completion of the dash won by Hanson the invert number was drawn and this time it was a one so no invert was used. The track was in great shape for the start of the feature with Adam Hensel taking the lead on the drop of the green and never looking back. Jay Ihrke worked into second. Steve Laursen and Hanson raced for third early on. After five completed laps the field spread out slightly as they settled in for a long green flag run. The top six seemed to race single file while behind them two and three wide racing was the norm as many strong runners started deep in the pack. Mark Teske and Pat Doar had the best race early on up front as they ran for the fifth position with Doar holding onto the advantage. At the halfway point of the feature Laursen was slowly gaining ground on Ihrke for the second spot while Hensel continued to pull away up front and started working on lapped traffic. A caution with seventeen to go saw Brian Diede and Lance Matthees touch going into one with Matthees loosing the handle on his mount and spinning into the turn one wall. On the restart Doar moved around Hanson for the fourth spot. With sixteen to go Laursen moved to the outside of Ihrke and the two touched two or three times down the front straight. As they entered one they touched again with both cars spinning into the wall in turn one collecting Teske and Hanson in the wreck. The later two were able to continued the race with the second and third place cars gone off the track on a hook. On the restart Hensel was in second with Doar working past Hanson now for second. Joel Cryderman and Keith Foss worked their way patiently through the field and now were side by side for fifth. Cryderman took the spot and two laps later worked under Hanson for third. With ten to go Cryderman moved under Doar for the second spot leaving Doar and Foss behind to battle for third. Hensel continued to dominate up front and slowly pulled away from the field to take his first win of the season.
