(Woodhull, NY) After winning the past two 358 Modified features at the Woodhull Raceway, Curt VanPelt looked poised to make it a three peat last Saturday night, however his younger brother and Ted White Racing team mate, Billy VanPelt was not going to be denied his fifth trip to Woodhull’s Victory Lane as “The Kid” put it all together to win the 25 lap feature event. With only three caution flags to slow the event, the VanPelt Brothers had to stay on the whip all event long as early race leaders, Dale Welty and Frank Dunning set a torrid pace. Welty was able to hold the lead until just past the half way mark when Billy V. was able to move past and take away the top spot. In just few more laps Curt V. was in second and drawing a bead on Billy and the huge crowd on hand could sense another one/two VanPelt finish and that is just exactly what happened as the two motored away to a comfortable margin leaving Welty, Roger Williams and Dunning to race for second thru fifth and at the checkered flag that is just how the top five finished. It has been another incredible season for the Van Pelt brothers at Woodhull as they continue to push each other to the point championship. Six thru ten were Stacy Jackson, Kevin Chilson, Rookie of the year contender, Greg Galligan, Bryan Terwilliger who started last and Herbie Wright. Qualifying heat races went to Ray Bliss Jr., Curt VanPelt, Steve Hartman Jr. and Roger Williams with Donnie Lawson taking the win in the 12 lap B-main. In addition, numerous Crate Sportsmen tried to qualify for the 358 Modified feature and at the finish, Kenny Peoples Jr. received the $250 bonus for his 16th place finish.
The NAPA Super Stocks continue with an impressive car count as some 20 machines took the opening green flag which saw a major incident before many of the cars even crossed the start line. Carl Hills, Tracy Stanford, Gene Galligan and Rich Marlatt all received damage and were done for the night. On the ensuing re-start journeyman driver, Steve Kent was at the head of the class for several laps before the top Woodhull regulars were able to move past and take control of the event. Larry Knowles and Jeremy Wonderling put on a terrific battle for the remainder of the event and a late race yellow bunched the field and allowed Glen Whritenour and Wayne Robertson to get into the mix. However, at the end Jeremy Wonderling had made this third visit to victory lane as Knowles, Whritenour, Robertson and Bruce Davis chased him across the line. Steve Kent held on for sixth followed by Mick Seeley, Kenny Peoples Sr., Scott Brown and Eric Matthews. Qualifying heats went to Robertson and Davis.
The Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stocks were next on the line as a full field of cars took the opening green. Yellow fever was the theme of the 20 lap feature as several caution flags slowed the event, something totally uncharacteristic of the Street Stock Class. However when the event was completed it was a totally new face in Woodhull’s victory lane as Elmira native, Nick Robinson showed that he can play with the Woodhull regulars as he completed dominated the event in only his first appearance at the track this season. A Redline Raceway weekly competitor, Robinson may have found a Saturday Night home on the high banks as he was chased across the line by Brian Knowles, Jim Buck, Rod Mullen and Henry Miracle. Six thru tenth were Zach Sutton, Cliff Moss, Joe White, Chuck Pruden and Lance Baker. Heat wins went to Miracle, Dan Gordon and Knowles.
Brian Grant is having his best year ever in the Signs Plus of Kanona Mini Stock Division and by virtue of his 4th feature event win on Saturday he is solidifying his chances at a title run. Grant made short work of his win having started mid pack he waltzed to his second win in as many weeks as he was followed by Mike Smith, Art Goodier, Ted Morseman Jr., Brett Marlatt, Adam Austin, Ed Mills, Tracy Dunn, Dennis Erdmann and A.J. Costley. Earlier evening heat wins were claimed by Goodier, Marlatt and Austin.
Last, but certainly not least the LaBarron Brothers Repair and Parts FWD Divison was set to go with their regular 20 lap feature event as early evening heat wins picked up by Ron Hill, Gary Baker and Kevin Patton. In the feature event it was a slug fest right from the drop of the opening green flag as every driver in the 28 car field was looking for racing room. In fact it looked more like rush hour traffic that a dirt track feature event with three and four wide competition on every lap, but in the end it was another familiar face checking into Woodhull’s victory lane as Jamie Freeman captured his third win of 2007 after a knock down, drag out fight with Mark Schenck early and Ron Hill at the end. Hill was able to get to Freeman’s rear bumper but couldn’t make the pass and had to settle for second place followed by Mr. Consistency, Kevin Patton. Fourth and fifth went to Isaac Byler and Gary Baker. Artie Moshier lead the charge of the next group of five across the line followed by Nick Morehouse, J.R. Hoppe, Tom McGlynn and Brandon Martin.
The Empire Super Sprints were on hand for the event, their first appearance on the high banks since 2000 and it was French Canadian competitor, Steve Poirier making the 9 hour trip worth while as he completely dominated the night winning the Dash for Cash as well as the 25 lap A-main. Full complete details of the ESS show at Woodhull go to the series web site or look elsewhere in this publication.
Next week it is “Trucking Night” as the L.J. Kennedy Trucking a long with Beam Mack Sales and Service will be at the track as the two nightly event sponsors. Also, joining the program the Mid-State Vintage Cars will make their lone appearance of 2007. Gates at 4;30 with racing at 6:30 pm
