KIRKWOOD, NY…The preparations have been made and the anticipation level is high as Five Mile Point Speedway prepares for the Race of Champions Dart Dirt Series Double Header this Wednesday night. The Modifieds will compete in a 75 lap event paying $4,000 to the winner and the Sportsman will do battle in a 40 lapper that will pay $1,000 to the race winner. Race time is set for 7:30 p.m. The raindate for this event is Thursday if needed.
The phones have been busy at the quarter mile office as interest for this big event is very high. The Modified field for the 75 lap event will certainly be star studded. Drivers like Defending RoC Tour Champion Alan Johnson, Southern Tier 100 winner Danny Johnson, recent RoC winner Brett Hearn, Bobby Varin, Mitch Gibbs, Pat Ward and Jerry Higbie are set to invade. Southern Pennsylvania stars Jeff Strunk and Mike Gular are anticipated as well as the hottest driver in New Jersey Rick Laubach. The local talent will be up for the task as they try to defend their home turf.
The Race of Champions Dart Dirt Sportsman Tour 40 will also be talent laden as teams from all over the northeast are expected for this event. Defending RoC Champion Danny Creedan, Pennsylvania standout Kyle Weiss, Utica Rome standout Brad Alger and many more will try and tackle the quarter mile.
The most recent renovations at the speedway just wrapped up on Monday afternoon as turns 3 and 4 were completed. The final concrete barriers were put in place with several more loads of clay put in place at the very top of the third and fourth turns. The quarter mile will be ready for this major event.
A raindate has been established for this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. should Wednesday’s event fall victim to the weather. A race decision will be made early on Wednesday if an imminent threat of weather is forecasted. Five Mile Point Speedway owner and Race of Champions Tour Director Andrew Harpell commented, “We will certainly take a hard look at the forecast on Wednesday morning and make the appropriate decision.” “With the price of fuel and so many teams traveling we will not force teams to waste a trip.” He added, “The recent rainout decision for the tour at Big Diamond was made timely and the race teams were thankful for that.”
Should the race be rescheduled for Thursday a special 25 lap Lightning Cat feature event will be held at the conclusion of the racing program. That race will pay $75 to win, $50 for second and $30 for third place. Harpell commented on the potential addition of the Cats. “We have had a number of teams that have called the office hoping for a mid-week event at the Point.” “There are a lot of teams that have other Saturday night commitments and would love to race with their buddies in a mid-week format.”
