The Clintar Groundskeeping presentation of the Southern Ontario Sprints on Saturday July 7th was one to remember for all the fans in the stands at Brighton Speedway. It was especially memorable for Joe Middlemiss who collected his first sprint car feature win of his career , following a hard fought victory over local favourite Rick Wilson who, until Saturday night , had been the only winner on the SOS 2007 tour.
Local drivers, both from Trenton, who saw the same success as Middlemiss were Terry Loxley, #8 in the Bill’s Johns Comp 4, and Shawn Gregory in his #1 Bainers Radiator Canadian Modified. Equally represented in the Winner’s Circle was the Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Month, #8 Gary Vandertoorn of Brighton, in the Mister Signz Pure Stock.
The Brighton Automotive Pro Stock Division had the night off following their successful competition Friday night at Edelweiss Speedway in Gatineau Quebec. The field of 25 cars on hand for the second race in the Eastern Ontario Stock Car Challenge saw Serge Lagacé from Edelwiess take the lead on the initial green. In the style that we are all familiar Brighton Speedway 2006 ProStock Champion, Ron Wadforth #40, took an aggressive lead on Lagacé on the third lap. The first caution of the feature came on lap 8 and on the restart, Lagacé was able to retake the lead on Wadforth and maintain it for the next eight laps and two other cautions. Running the corners like only the “Rocket” can, Wadforth overtook the lead in turn 1 and 2 on lap 18. The last 17 laps, gave the fans some great battles between the five first positions. Wadforth was able to stay in front and head to Victory Lane, despite attempts from not only Lagacé, but Brighton Drivers Doug Anderson (#72) who finished second and Brian Cross (#08) who finished fourth. Brighton Speedway Promoter Mark Rinaldi stated, “It’s great that the Rocket could come and win. Doug and Brian finished Top 5 too, which is even better. I appreciate that we had 8 of our drivers haul to this event and know that when the challenge continues in Brockville and Cornwall Brighton Speedway will be well represented. Our drivers are becoming known throughout as competitive and sportsmanlike and we couldn’t ask for anything more.”
The next race event is the Behan Construction salute to 9-1-1 Heroes. All police, fire and ambulance are admitted free with ID to watch the four regular classes at Brighton Speedway. Green flag flies at 7:00pm on Saturday July 14th. For more information, visit www.brightonspeedway.com.
