Danny Smith Holds Off Bud Kaeding for Paragon Win

Veteran Danny Smith picked up his first feature win with the O’Reilly Midwest All Star Series Saturday night, holding off a late charge by Bud Kaeding for the $2,000 winner’s prize, as winged sprint car racing returned to its historical roots in the Hoosier state.

Smith, from nearby Danville, started fourth in the thirty lap feature and overtook early leader and pole-sitter Robbie Standridge on the fifth circuit. Meanwhile, ninth-starting Bud Kaeding worked his way into the runner-up position midway through the race and challenged Smith late in the event. Smith prevailed to add another win to an illustrious career, which has garnered over 300 wins in sprint car competition throughout America and Australia.

Kevin Briscoe started sixth and finished third. Kyle Cummins had the drive of the night. After having problems in qualifying and being forced to start last in all events, the local racer raced to second in his heat and then put on a remarkable performance in the feature, advancing from twentieth to finish fourth. Tom Busch completed the top five.

Robbie Standridge was sixth, followed by Bill Rose, seventeen-year-old female driver Arin McIntosh, Ryan Bunton, who had to race from the C Main and current series points leader Jerrod Hull rounding out the top ten.

Heat races were won by Smith, Kaeding, Jared Fox and Bill Rose. Chase Stockton won the C Main and Jeremy Standridge copped the B Main. A series- record forty-six entries participated in the night’s program, which provided outstanding racing throughout the night for the large crowd in attendance.

Trouble befell All Star Circuit of Champions regular Paul May, who set fast time but was involved in a heat race crash which sidelined him for the remainder of the evening and series regular Tim Montgomery, who started the night second in series points but burnt a piston in his engine during his heat race and did not return. He had timed third quick for the evening.

The O’Reilly Midwest All Star Series will next be in action on Sunday, July 15th at Jefferson County Speedway in Mt. Vernon, IL. For more information, go to www.midwestallstarseries.com
