Fast Flies to ASCS Sprints on Dirt Win at I-96
T.J. Buffenberger, LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (July 13, 2007) Gary Fast won Friday nights Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz feature event at I-96 Speedway. Fast made the long drive down from Kalkaska, Michigan worthwhile by holding off challenges from Brett Mann and Steve Irwin to win the 20-lap main event. The win was Fasts second career ASCS SOD victory.
I brought on a new crew chief (Nathan Bevard), and its made a huge difference in our program, said Fast. I-96 is a track that has always eluded us, and it is nice to get a win here under our belt.
Bill Johnson and fast started on the front row and raced through turns one and two and down the backstretch side by side on the opening lap Fast then pulled away to nearly a straightway lead over the rest of the field.
Eventually Brett Mann worked his was into the second spot and was starting to run down Fast in lapped traffic when John Gall hit a marker tire sending his car airborne across the track. Mann was clipped by Gall and spun in turn one. Aaron Shaffer was also involved in the incident. Only Mann made the restart.
Fast opened up another sizeable lead when Ryan Ruhl and Jake Stebner made contact in turn two, bringing out the caution flag with three laps to go. This allowed Irwin to pull right up on the back bumper of Fast. Irwin hung with Fast through turns one and two, but off the second turn Fast got a run and opened up his lead and cruised to the finish. Irwin, Tim Norman, Mann from the tail of the field, and Dain Naida rounded out the top five.
Irwin, Johnson, and Naida won heat race events for the 20 car field. During hot laps Jim Lingar spun in turn four, leaving Ryan Grubaugh without an open lane as Grubaughs car slammed hard into the wall coming off turn four. Grubaugh was uninjured, but his car was too damaged to continue.
