MICHAEL CARBER ESTABLISHES HIMSELF AS THE MAN TO BEAT IN URC ACTION
SATURDAY NIGHT AT NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY
New Egypt, NJ . . . . . Michael Carber of Piperville, PA was the
big winner in the Saturday night URC BAR'S LEAKS Sprint feature at the
New Egypt Speedway. Carber, driving the Guy Howie owned URC sprinter
earned $2,000 for his win in the twenty-five lap feature event. Carber
took the lead on lap four from Dave Betts, then went on unchallenged to
score his second win of the season. In thirteen URC events this season,
Michael Carber and URC point leader Curt Michael are the only two
drivers to have duplicate victories this season. Michael finished
second in the URC feature Saturday night.
A field of twenty-nine URC sprint cars took part in the New Egypt
Speedway racing program with heat race victories going to Dave Betts,
Tim Hogue and Michael Carber as Trevor Lewis won the Don Ott "B" Main.
In the twenty-five lap URC feature event, Dave Betts was the early race
leader. On lap four the red was displayed for Andrew Hannula who
flipped in turn one. Hannula did walk away uninjured from the accident
however, the damage sustained to his race car was beyond repair to
continue.. When green flag racing resumed, Carber bolted into the lead
using the outside lane to pass Betts. Scott Pursell ran third with Curt
Michael now in fourth after starting eleventh.
At the halfway point of the race, Carber had a commanding lead with
Betts in a solid runner-up spot as Michael followed in third. Also on a
charge was J. J Grasso who was now racing in fourth followed by Pursell.
Grasso started deep in the pack after being involved in a wild heat race
crash. As the race went on, Michael began to reel in Betts and on lap
seventeen, the current URC point leader moved into second. Carber was
far out of sight of Michael and his BK Leasing #99 and only a caution
could re-group the field.
With just two laps to go, the caution did appear for Kevin Welsh who
came to a stop in turn four. On the restart, Carber was the leader with
just one lapped car between first and second. With the green flag
waiving, Carber bolted as Michael had to contend with the slower car.
By the middle of the backstretch on the white flag lap, Michael did
clear the lapped car but Carber was already eight to ten car lengths
ahead. Carber toured the New Egypt Speedway for the final lap and
easily took the win, his second of the year, second of his URC career
and second consecutive win at the New Egypt Speedway. Curt Michael
finished second followed by J.J. Grasso, Dave Betts and Brian Seidel.
Making up the top ten were Scott Pursell, Trevor Lewis, Tim Hogue, Ed
Aikin and Kyle Purks (driving the John Pinter #92).
During the running of the third heat, race leader Jimmy Martin spun in
front of traffic coming out of turn four on the first lap. Martin
flipped along with Ed Aikin, Chris Coyle and Adam Gordon. All drivers
walked away uninjured. Aikin, Coyle and Gordon repaired their badly
damaged sprints cars and were able to start the feature event.
