Wetzstein Ends Deer Creek Drought

By Bill Nelson

July 14, 2007

Spring Valley Mn

With upper seventies temperature (a rarity in July in Minnesota) with a cool breeze it was a prefect night for racing in southern Minnesota. Whitewater Wireless and Clements Auto were the nightly sponsor as 104 cars checked into the back gate.

Josh Angst led the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds out of turn two to take the lead in their feature event. Kenny Wytaske, Dan Wheeler and Jerry Young all won heat races with Bryan Hernandez taking home the win in the “B” feature. Behind Angst, Wheeler, Harlan Morehart and Jeff BRauer were three wide for second with Brauer taking control of the position after the completion of lap one. As the field battled two and three wide around the speedway Wheeler took control of the second spot with two down and on the next lap sped to the outside of Angst to take over the lead. Further back front runners Jimmie Arnold, Kenny Wytaske and Jered Boumeester were three wide for sixth with Arnold eventually taking that spot. With eleven laps left Wheeler was cruising out front with Angst in second trying to hold off the advances of Brauer. Arnold worked on Brandon Davis for third as a caution flew. On the restart Wheeler brought them in really slow keeping the field bunched up as they entered turn one. Brauer got the jump and exiting turn two had a good run on Wheeler while the Wytaske, Arnold and Davis ran three wide for third. Eight to go saw Arnold in third with Brauer still trying to find a faster line behind Wheeler, with Arnold slowly making ground on the leaders. With four left Arnold worked under Brauer for second just as a caution flew negating the pass. With the final restart Wheeler stayed out front with Brauer in second. Chris Adams finished his charge from mid-pack by moving around Arnold for third with Young rounding out the top five.

Danny Hanson led the early laps of the Tim’s Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stock feature event with Tony Horsman and Fred Prudoehl racing for second. On lap two of the eighteen lap feature Bobby Kilby split Horsman and Prudoehl for second. After a quick restart Scot Nelson took a new line and charged into second on the first lap after the restart following Hanson around the speedway. With five completed Nelson moved under Hanson for the lead with Kilby sitting in third. Ryan Goergen and AJ Zvorak were racing for fourth in their own two wide battle with Cory Crapser and Steve Eischens side by side behind them. With half of the feature length completed Nelson led followed by Hanson and Kilby. Crapser and Nathan Finley worked around the battles to take over fourth and fifth position. With Nelson cruising up front Hanson and Kilby ran the last three laps side by side with neither having much of an advantage at the line. As the checkers waved Nelson came home with the win, Hanson held on for second, Kilby in third followed by Crapser and Goergen.

The US Army WISSOTA Super Stocks took to the track for their feature event. The top six cars stayed side by side for the first lap until a caution flew. On the restart Troy Brand took control of the event with two by two racing behind him. Chris Klinger took control of second on lap three with Jesse Redetske in third. Ryan Siegle moved up the track slightly and found a groove to his liking moving into the fourth position ahead of Cole Queensland. Redetske and Siegle worked low on Klinger to take over second and third with fifteen to go. Redetske started working on Brand for the lead but lost the handle of his machine bringing out a caution. On the restart Queensland moved into second with Siegle in third with a big pack of cars on his bumper racing for position. A restart with eleven to go saw Brand leading with Queensland and Siegle side by side for position and passing Brand for the lead. Queensland took over the lead at that point while Chris Quast moved past Brand for third. Another restart with five to go saw Quast blast into the lead from the second row. Quast held the point for a lap until another caution flew. On the restart Queensland moved outside of Quast for the lead and the ultimate win. Following Quast home was Klinger, Kevin Hager and Redetske after working his way back up through the field.

With a few cars still damaged from last weeks racing action and a few local drivers out west for the Rumble the Valley Featherlite WISSOTA Late Models had their lowest car count of the season with fifteen checking into the back gate. Paul Novotny led lap one with Mark Teske taking over second. Novotny brought out the first caution of the night as he spun entering turn one on lap two of the event. Teske took the lead with Jay Ihrke in second. Behind them Nick Herrick and Mike Prochnow had a good race going for third. With five laps completed Teske pushed up hard in turn four allowing Ihrke to take over the point. Nate Wasmund was sitting solidly in third until Prochnow came up to challenge him for the spot with eighteen to go. With ten laps completed Ihrke and Teske were side by side for the lead. The two ran side by side for two laps until Teske took control of the race again. Wasmund and Prochnow had the race for the final ten laps racing side by side and changing spots on the speedway. Prochnow eventually took over the control of third with three to go. Teske took home the win with Ihrke, Prochnow, Wasmund and Andrew McKay getting around Kramer for fifth.

Some nights the fans call the USRA Modifieds “restartifieds” as they always seem to have three or four cautions. But not tonight as the feature event went green to checkers without a hint of a yellow flag waving. Kelly Shryock started on the pole driving the Ron Frericks owned #21h car normally driven by Jim Horejsi. Steve Wetzstein started on the outside of the front row looking for his first win at the speedway since 2002. Wetzstein took a slight advantage on lap one with Mike Sorensen in third, Brad waits fourth and Bob Timm quickly moved into the top five. Timm took over fourth from Waits on lap five using the extreme bottom of the speedway. Up front Wetzstein continued to lead with Shryock close and even pulling alongside a few times but not able to get completely alongside of the leader. With thirteen to go lapped traffic started to come into play with Wetzstein working them perfectly. Three laps later Wetzstein pulled out to a small lead while Waits started making a higher groove work again. Seven to go and Timm pulled up close to Shryock for second after clearing Sorensen three laps earlier. Waits worked back into the top five with five to go. At the line it was Wetzstein with the win, Shryock in second, Timm, Sorensen and Waits rounded out the top five.
