YOUNG WINS IRA DUEL AT CHARTER
7/14 Beaver Dam, WI Scott Young claimed his first Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series victory of the season by claiming Charter Raceway Park's Duel At The Dam. Young led flag to flag in the thirty lap contest aboard his family J&J Gaerte no.3.
Young and front-row mate John Haeni jumped out in front of the field and instantly opened up a comfortable margin over the field. Young ran the high line of the banked third-mile and kept a comfortable five car length lead over Haeni. Sixth starting Brian Kristan and eighth starting Travis Whitney moved up to third and fourth while eleventh starting Mike Kertscher now ran fifth.
First heat winner Andy Hunt brought out the initial yellow several laps into the affair as he backed lightly into the third turn concrete. On the restart Whitney overtook Haeni for second, and Kristan battled Haeni in a great fight for third.
There were several good battles throughout the field, contact between Doony Goeden and Mike Reinke who were in the midst of a good race for tenth with several others, made contact resulting in Goeden bringing out a lap twenty caution.
Young again pulled out to a five car length margin, this time over Whitney. Two laps later Tommy Sexton would bring out the third and final caution as he spun in turn two.
An eight lap dash would conclude the event as Young continued to dominate on the high side. Whitney who suffered nose wing damage from early contact with Kristan now had his hands full protecting second from Kristan and Haeni. Kristan and Haeni traded slide jobs with Haeni eventually taking third, though Whitney held on for second at the finish. Kristan would come home fourth, and Kertscher fifth. Billy Warren took sixth, Scotty Neitzel overtook Steve Meyer on the last lap to claim seventh, while Reinke and Todd King completed the top ten.
With the Badger Midgets (Mike Hess-winner) sharing the the card in Charter's two Duel events, it was IRA's turn to utilize passing points instead of the normal qualifying procedure. Bill Warren was high pont man after the heats and is credited with an Osborn & Son fast time award as he topped the twenty-nine car field. Heat wins went to Hunt, Young, and Warren, while Scott Biertzer captured the B-main.
IRA heads into a big three-day, three state weekend July 20-22 with events begiinning at the Hancock (IA) Speedway, Deer Creek (MN) Speedway, and LaFaayette (WI) Co Speedway. IRA is an ASA affilliated series.
